Overview
Are you an experienced machine learning, artificial intelligence, and signal processing engineer who enjoys developing and implementing novel solutions to find hidden trends and patterns from weak signals in complex data sources? Do you have experience in proposing ideas for solutions to complex problems and leading teams to usher them from initial concept through early experimentation to prototypes and integrated solutions? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL. As an experienced signal processing and AI/ML engineer, you will apply your expertise to a variety of remote sensing applications in the maritime domain. You will join a team of engineers, software developers, and applied scientists who have a twenty-plus year track record of generating impactful AI/ML and signal processing concepts and transitioning them to real-time implementations running in operational military systems. You will have opportunities and be encouraged to interact with external sponsors and stakeholders, propose and lead new projects, and pursue signal processing and AI/ML development work in new application areas. Our team values creativity, collaboration, technical expertise, mission impact, and bold ideas and execution. As an experienced signal processing and AI/ML engineer you will... Develop novel machine learning, signal processing, and information processing solutions for the maritime domain including passive, active, and sidescan sonar systems as well as other remote sensing systems for U.S. government sponsors. Document and present your work to internal and external stakeholders, working groups, and sponsors. Seek-out and lead proposal submission efforts for new and follow-on algorithm development work. Lead efforts to transition your technical solutions to real-time prototypes and embedded software systems. Mentor, coach, and collaborate with colleagues to help build a cohesive, productive, and impactful team. Keep abreast of state-of-the-art technology advancements that could impact maritime signal processing and AI/ML systems. Travel as required. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you... Possess a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline, Have 6 or more years' total experience applying signal processing, machine learning, or information processing to acoustic sensor, electronic warfare, communications, or remote sensing data, Have demonstrated technical leadership on projects applying signal processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or information processing to algorithm development and algorithm performance evaluation, Have demonstrated experience in interfacing with DoD stakeholders and proposing and winning proposals to fund research and development efforts, Are proficient using Python, MATLAB, or an equivalent language for algorithm development and data analysis, Have demonstrated effective verbal and written communications in forums such as academic or industry conferences, peer working groups, journal or conference publications, Have demonstrated experience in using state-of-the-art machine learning and/or signal processing to solve challenging problems on noisy, complex datasets and applications of interest to DoD stakeholders, Have experience in writing white papers and proposals, Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you... Possess PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline, Have published in academic journals and conferences focused on signal processing and machine learning, for example, IEEE PAMI, IEEE ICASSP, NeurIPS, ICML, JMLR, or other similar venues, Have experience as a member of industrial or governmental working groups and/or workshop or conference technical or planning committees.
