Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic professional Adjunct Instructor-Surgical Tech Program who is passionate about cultivating the school's mission and objectives through student instruction, guidance and review to ensure successful development of each student.
Because of our commitment to community, employment preference is given to residents who live in WV and the New River Community Technical College service area of Braxton, Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, and Summers, West Virginia counties.
The individual in this position will have the flexibility to choose anyone of our campus locations (Raleigh County Campus, Greenbrier County Campus, Nicholas County Campus or Mercer County Campus) as their primary work location. This position also provides flexibility to conduct classroom sessions via Zoom.
This position reports directly to the Dean of Allied Health, Nursing and Natural Science. The position will work collaboratively with management, faculty and staff within the department and college to serve the best interests of the students.
This role is an adjunct, exempt, position and serves at the will and pleasure of the College President.

Job Summary
The Surgical Technology Adjunct Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality classroom, laboratory,
and clinical instruction to students enrolled in the Surgical Technology program. The Adjunct Instructor
plays a key role in helping prepare competent entry-level surgical technologists in the cognitive
(knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (professionalism) learning domains. This position involves
curriculum delivery aligned with national standards, student evaluation, and support of institutional and
programmatic goals related to academic quality and student success.
Nature of Work
The Surgical Technology Adjunct Instructor performs instructional duties in a dynamic learning
environment that includes classroom teaching, hands-on lab demonstrations, and support of clinical
learning outcomes through lab instruction. The work requires thorough knowledge of surgical procedures,
aseptic technique, instrumentation, and the roles of the surgical technologist within the operating room
team. Instructors must stay current with industry practices and certification requirements.
Responsibilities
The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for delivering instructional content and supporting programmatic
goals through direct teaching and assessment. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: • Deliver didactic and laboratory instruction in accordance with the Surgical Technology program
curriculum. • Facilitate student learning through lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, return
demonstrations, and skill assessments in a laboratory setting. • Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments that align with course objectives
and promote student engagement and success. • Evaluate student performance in didactic and lab environments using appropriate rubrics and
competency checklists; provide timely, constructive feedback. • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, competencies, and academic progress
as required by institutional policy. • Support the Clinical Coordinator by reinforcing concepts and skills students need to demonstrate
during clinical rotations. • Participate in curriculum review • Maintain professional certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA and complete ongoing professional development in accordance with institutional policy and program standards. • Participate in faculty meetings, program advisory committee meetings, and institutional training or events as needed. • Model professional behavior, ethical standards, and effective communication in all interactions with students, staff, and clinical partners. • Demonstrate effective classroom management.
Professional Development
The Adjunct Instructor is expected to engage in continuous professional development to maintain and
enhance their professional, instructional, and administrative competencies. This includes:
Professional Development
- Maintain current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the
National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as permitted by
institutional policy and in alignment with accreditation goals.
- Remain current in clinical practice standards and surgical technologies as aligned with the
Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology (CCST).
- Participate in educational workshops, seminars, and faculty development programs to
support effective instruction and student learning.
- Maintain professional memberships, such as the Association of Surgical Technologists
(AST), to support continued engagement in the surgical technology profession. • Ongoing Development:
- Engage in continuous professional development in both technical competencies and
instructional methodology.
- Complete annual continuing education activities (CEUs), trainings, or certifications to
maintain instructional excellence and industry relevance.
- Contribute to curriculum updates and revisions to reflect current best practices in surgical
technology and student learning outcomes.
- Participate in institutional and external professional development opportunities to enhance
teaching effectiveness, assessment skills, and accreditation readiness.
Maintain accurate records of all professional development activities for reporting purposes.
Education
Associate's degree - Surgical Technology (CAAHEP - or ABHES - accredited) - Required
Bachelor's degree or Higher - Health Sciences, Surgical Technology, Education, or related field - Preferred
Credential in the field of Surgical Technology accredited by NCCA - Valid CST License - Required

The Adjunct Instructor must:
1. Hold a minimum of an associate degree, Surgical Technology (CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited).
2. Possess a current credential in surgical technology awarded by a national certification body accredited
by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
3. Acceptable credentials include: • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA
4. Credential must be active and maintained throughout instructional appointment
5. Have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in the scrub role or as an instructor/preceptor, within
the past five (5) years, or three years teaching in the field of surgical technology prior to employment.
6. Experience must reflect active participation in surgical procedures or direct student instruction in the
surgical setting
7. Demonstrate foundational knowledge of curriculum, student evaluation methods, and clinical/laboratory
performance assessment
8. This may be satisfied through instructional experience, preceptorship, or documented training in
teaching and assessment practices
9. Engage in ongoing professional development in both instructional methodology and surgical
technology
10. Must pursue CEUs, workshops, or formal instructional training on an annual basis
11. Faculty development must be documented and reflect growth in both clinical and teaching
competencies
12. Professional membership (e.g., AST) and attendance at relevant conferences or webinars are
encouraged
13. Participate in program-level instruction, skills labs, and student assessments as assigned
14. Involvement must support the delivery of the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology and institutional
learning objectives
15. Including but not limited to curriculum mapping, student learning outcome documentation, and advisory
committee engagement
16. Meet all institutional employment standards for adjunct faculty appointment
17. Including submission of official transcripts, current credential verification, and professional development
records
