Description:
The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility.
The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, High Level Disinfection (HLD), assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans.
These functions are performed using state-of-the-art decontamination, HLD, and sterilization equipment.
Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed to operating rooms and clinics.
These items are tracked by a bar code system.
Responsibilities include inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts.
The technician selects methods of packaging and sterilization consulting with the Processing Manager as needed.
Surgical instrumentation is examined for cleanliness, proper assembly, and function.
The technician assembles instrument sets ensuring the appropriate number and type of instruments per established protocols.
Instruments are handled appropriately to ensure sterilization.
Count and supply sheets document the contents of trays.
Established procedures are followed to package and wrap trays and instruments to guarantee sterilization.
Steam sterilizers are operated in accordance with established procedures.
The technician checks time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently to attain and maintain proper levels.
Loading and unloading sterilizers and placing items on shelves for distribution is part of the role.
Simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets, is performed.
Sterility is assured by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting the results, and completing required documentation.
Medical equipment is checked and adjusted according to specific procedures to ensure operation according to specifications prior to issuing.
All equipment not meeting specifications is sent to the appropriate area for repair.
Surgical instruments and equipment are decontaminated following established procedures.
Cross-contamination is prevented according to established procedures.
Decontamination equipment is set up for operation, and work areas are cleaned and disinfected upon completion of the shift.
Infectious waste and linen are handled per established protocol to ensure compliance with department, legal, and regulatory standards.
Supplies from outside vendors and hospital areas are received and stored.
Stock is checked against requisitions upon receipt.
Discrepancies are documented and reported.
Maintaining par levels of inventory is essential.
Orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas are documented and filled.
Supplies are delivered when warranted.
Records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment referred for repair are maintained.
Quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments is the technician's responsibility.
Daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts are performed.
Critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets is managed.
Preferred qualifications include Level 1 trauma center experience, Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER Cert), and orthopedic tray experience.
Behavioral characteristics and skills should align with the expectations of this role.
