AMI 2.0 & Utility Data Architecture Specialist: (Focus: MDMS, Analytics & Edge Use Cases) Location:
Flexible (North America preferred) — Remote with occasional travel to client sites About TechBlocks: TechBlocks is a technology services firm focused on building next-generation platforms, applications, and products. We are working with forward-looking utilities across North America to reimagine their AMI 2.0 strategy — unlocking new business value through advanced analytics, modern data platforms, and edge computing architectures. We are seeking a seasoned utility domain expert who can help our clients move beyond the limits of traditional MDMS platforms (e.g., Itron) and build scalable, AI-ready, and use-case-driven data ecosystems. Role Overview: As an AMI 2.0 & Utility Data Architecture Specialist, you will lead the discovery, design, and strategic roadmap development for utility clients transitioning to AMI 2.0. You’ll focus on advanced MDMS use cases, data platform design, and bridging the gaps left by traditional vendor solutions. This role demands deep industry knowledge, technical leadership, and client-facing consulting experience. Key Responsibilities: Lead technical discovery and architecture sessions with utility clients on AMI 2.0 programs. Design enterprise data architectures that complement or extend traditional MDMS platforms like Itron, covering real-time analytics, event management, and edge computing use cases. Define data pipelines, integrations, and domain models required to support complex use cases (e.g., outage prediction, DER forecasting, load disaggregation, grid event analytics). Identify and fill functional and architectural gaps in COTS MDMS platforms. Collaborate with client teams across IT, data, and operations to drive alignment between architecture and business needs. Develop roadmap documents, architecture blueprints, and readiness assessments for long-term digital evolution. Stay current with trends in AMI standards (e.g., IEEE 2030.5), DER, grid-edge intelligence, and next-gen utility platforms. Support RFP evaluations and strategic decisions related to MDMS, DPU, and analytics tooling. Qualifications: 10+ years of experience in the utility sector with deep understanding of AMI 2.0 and smart metering architectures. Hands-on experience with MDMS platforms (Itron strongly preferred) and their implementation/limitations. Experience architecting or leading enterprise data platform initiatives (e.g., Azure, GCP, AWS) within utilities. Strong grasp of distributed systems, data lakes, streaming platforms (Kafka, Spark, etc.), and event-driven architectures. Deep knowledge of AMI use cases including interval data processing, real-time alerts, demand forecasting, grid reliability analytics, TOU billing, DER integration, and customer engagement. Experience designing or working with edge analytics solutions and/or utility IoT frameworks. Familiarity with enterprise integration (CIM, IEC 61968, 61970), data governance, and data quality frameworks. Strong communication and consulting skills with executive stakeholders. Preferred: Experience with DPU (Data Platform for Utilities) concepts or implementations. Prior work at or with utilities during large-scale AMI/MDMS transformations.
