Flight Termination SystemsElectronics Technician I/IIDescription/Job SummaryThe Electronics Technician I/II is accountable to the Flight Termination Systems (FTS) Work Group Lead (WGL) for the overall support of in-scope work in WBS 160. This posting is for a Flight Termination Systems Electronics Technician but may include assisting in Range Communications operations and maintenance when necessary. This includes providing technical support to ensure timely completion of work while meeting or exceeding quality standards. This position receives technical guidance from the WGL and, on occasion, the senior coworkers such as the Field Service Engineer. Work is reviewed for compliance with accepted practices.Responsibilities/DutiesConfigure, operate, and maintain Flight Termination Systems and when requested, Range Radio Frequency (RF), digital voice communications systems, and associated equipment in support of the Dryden Aeronautical Tracking Range (DATR) at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.In the event of system failure, perform methodical troubleshooting using a variety of calibrated test equipment and software tools. Understand system signal flow, and use RF electronics, and software knowledge to identify failed equipment to the component level. Accurately document preventative and corrective maintenance activities as required by quality standards. Electronics Technician I/II will assist with maintenance, usually under the direction of a higher-level technician. Assist Field Service Engineers with the design, development, fabrication, installation, and testing of hardware and software system modifications and upgrades.Required SkillsThorough understanding of electronics fundamentals to include operation and identification of active and passive components like resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, relays, and transformers.Thorough understanding of RF fundamentals and theory, frequency, amplitude, and phase modulation. Familiarity with RF components I.e. amplifiers, patch panels, couplers, and filters.Ability to configure and operate computers running Red Hat Linux. Knowledge of common business applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Visio.Ability to clearly communicate system status and performance in writing and over voice-networks with other work groups and customers.Ability to successfully complete the NASA soldering course.Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Secret Security Clearance.Must possess a valid driver's license.Preferred SkillsPerform other related duties as required by management to include supporting other work centers during surges. This may include cross training into other functional areas to meet overall contract performance objectives. Assist with general housekeeping of the work area. May be required to support safety, environmental, and tower climbing activities.Working with FTS systems including setting up ETFS/ IRIG missions. Basic understanding of Linux operating systems, mount/unmount flash drives, use of Linux user interface. Basic networking understanding i.e. Network switches, Ip addresses. COMSEC experience, working with/ handling sensitive documentation and equipment. Use of a COMSEC secured safe.Required ExperienceElectronics Technician I: Familiarity with electronics and electronics theory, one or more years of related work experience is desirable. In lieu of experience, training from an accredited electronics course or related course will be required to be completed within 9 months of hire.Electronics Technician II: requires at least 3 years of related work experience.Required EducationElectronics Technician I will have some formal education in a relevant field and have demonstrated technical abilities. This can include standard industry certifications.Electronics Technician II/III will have an associate degree in aerospace, Electrical, Computer Engineering or a closely related field or completion of formal training in an accredited commercial or military electronics school.Work EnvironmentRange environment with work at remote locations, prolonged sitting while using the computer and the telephone, constant use of sight abilities, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness. Ability to work extended and flexible hours including some nights and weekends. Ability to pass a heavy equipment physical exam required to operate motorized equipment such as forklifts, bucket lifts, and platform personnel lifts. Ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. Ability to climb stairs and ladders. Ability to work on Towers and high platforms. The work location is in a desert environment, and employees are in contact with various desert wildlife.
