A Vision Instructor, also known as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) or Vision Specialist, provides specialized instruction and support to students who are blind or have visual impairments. Their goal is to help students access the curriculum, develop independent living skills, and succeed in both academic and non-academic settings. Job Title: Vision Instructor (Teacher of the Visually Impaired) Job Summary: The Vision Instructor provides direct and consultative services to students with visual impairments in a variety of educational settings. They work collaboratively with general and special education staff, families, and related service providers to support the educational development and independence of students with vision loss. Key Responsibilities: Assess students' visual functioning and learning needs through formal and informal evaluations. Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and instructional plans based on student assessments. Provide direct instruction in areas such as: Braille reading and writing Use of assistive technology (screen readers, magnifiers, notetakers) Orientation and mobility (in collaboration with Orientation and Mobility Specialists) Visual efficiency and compensatory skills Daily living and organizational skills Modify classroom materials and adapt instructional strategies to ensure accessibility. Consult with general and special education teachers regarding classroom accommodations, modifications, and strategies for inclusion. Train and support staff and family members in working with students with visual impairments. Maintain accurate records of student progress, services provided, and IEP documentation. Participate in IEP meetings, team planning sessions, and professional development related to visual impairment education. Qualifications: Bachelor's or master's degree in special education or related field with a specialization in visual impairment. Valid teaching certification with an endorsement in Visual Impairments (TVI credential). Experience working with students with visual impairments in educational settings. Proficiency in Braille (literary and Nemeth Code) and assistive technology for the visually impaired. Strong collaboration and communication skills. Work Environment: Travels between schools and/or student homes as needed. Works with students from preschool through high school. May involve lifting or moving instructional equipment and materials.
