Overview
MACC Development is a Christian community development corporation committed to the holistic revitalization of Detroit’s 48214 community, block by block, neighbor by neighbor. We exist to see the gospel advanced, and to promote the dignity, value, and worth of every resident. Founded by Mack Avenue Community Church in 2010, MACC Development is one of Detroit’s most innovative nonprofits. Since its inception, MACC Development has been led by 48214 residents, and today, the organization is proud that 80% of its staff and Board are proud 48214 residents. Over the past decade, MACC Development has impacted thousands of Detroiters through its five main initiatives: MACC Education, MACC Sports, MACC Missions, MACC Housing, and The Commons. These initiatives are all tailored to outspoken needs in the community and provide a gospel-centered means for linking families to opportunities and resources to which they may not otherwise have access. MACC Education
engages a legacy of illiteracy through individualized tutoring, summer day camps, and other educational programming for infants, pre-schoolers, and elementary students. MACC Education elementary students see an average of nearly 2.5 grade levels of reading growth every year. We’ve also leaned into Math and STEAM initiatives as well. MACC Sports
manages a growing portfolio of neighborhood youth sports leagues and camps (soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball, and cheerleading), while also providing access to educational services and mentoring support. Today, MACC Sports serves hundreds of youth ages 4-14 year round. MACC Missions
invites those outside of Detroit to come and spend a day, weekend, or week serving in the 48214. This initiative has allowed for dozens of organizations across Michigan and the country to meet our neighbors and understand our purpose. MACC Housing
aids longstanding and prospective 48214 residents in acquiring, renovating, and remaining homes and commercial properties in our community. MACC Housing has itself renovated several homes, and currently, MACC Development is developing a comprehensive approach to affordable housing for key pockets of the 48214. The Commons
is a $1.5 million mixed-use community center anchored by a cafe/laundromat small business wholly owned and operated by MACC Development. In addition, The Commons provides leasable office space to local businesses and nonprofit organizations, welcomes a diverse array of community events, hosts groups of volunteers throughout the year, and serves as the headquarters for MACC Lit, MACC Legal, and the MACC Development staff team. It is the first of several steps towards activating the Mack Avenue Corridor, a thirteen block stretch running through the 48214 which MACC Development has targeted for strategic, community-driven economic development. MACC Development exists because we value our neighbors, community and the city of Detroit. Our plans and strategies are developed based on the needs and hopes of our community, which means truly knowing the community is essential to our success.
In the last few years, MACC Development has seen tremendous growth in program quality and scale. These efforts have been celebrated in publications like
Wall Street Journal, Crain’s Detroit,
and
