The University of New Hampshire College of Professional Studies seeks a part-time attorney to serve as a Legal Instructor/Consultant. This role supports the professional development of new staff in the NH Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF), particularly those working in child protection and juvenile justice. The position includes curriculum instruction, support for new attorneys, legislative implementation support, and subject matter expertise on legal content development. This role is expected to average approximately 20 hours per week and will report to the Associate Director.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Instruction (Core Focus – 10 Courses Annually):

Teach approximately 10 in-person Core Academy courses per year for new DCYF staff in child protection and juvenile justice. Ensure that pre-service legal curriculum includes, at minimum: Trial skills and courtroom procedures Preparation of witnesses for court Best practices in child protection legal work Deliver content that supports legal readiness and builds confidence in handling court-involved child welfare cases.

Mentorship & Virtual Support

Welcome and orient newly hired DCYF attorneys to the virtual Learning Management System to complete their pre-service training within their first year of hire.

Curriculum Consultation & Legal Updates

Collaborate with curriculum writers and instructional designers to develop, revise, and maintain legally sound instructional materials. Ensure all content reflects the most current laws, court procedures, and agency policy. Participate in legislative rollouts and statewide training to support implementation of legal updates.

Collaboration With Legal Partners

Attend and contribute to meetings and initiatives with the New Hampshire Court Improvement Project, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and other legal stakeholders as needed. Build alignment and shared understanding of DCYF’s legal training with external legal partners and judicial leadership.

Online Training & Learning Management

Support and facilitate ongoing legal learning for foster and kin caregivers through online learning platforms. Contribute to legal content in the Learning Management System (LMS) and ensure accessibility of legal resources year-round.

Administrative & Planning Duties

Work with the Lead IC to maintain training records, provide attendance documentation, and submit feedback on instructional delivery. Attend planning meetings as needed to coordinate legal training needs and support DCYF staff development. Participate in professional development opportunities related to legal instruction, training, or DCYF practice.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Minimum of 3 years of legal experience, preferably related to child protection or juvenile justice. Demonstrated teaching or training experience (in-person, virtual, or blended). Strong understanding of child welfare legal issues, courtroom processes, and state legislation affecting youth and families. Familiarity with virtual tools and learning platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Canvas or other LMS).

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work with DCYF or similar public welfare agency. Experience contributing to curriculum or policy development. Knowledge of New Hampshire-specific child welfare statutes and administrative rules.
