Job Summary and Description:
This part-time student internship supports EPRI's Controls and Automation Program within the Generation Sector, focusing on advanced research in water treatment plant (WTP) optimization and AI integration. The intern will contribute to cutting-edge energy research that supports sustainable water and energy systems.
This role is ideal for students interested in applying data science, control systems, and AI to real-world infrastructure challenges. Interns will work closely with EPRI staff and technical mentors, gaining exposure to multi-disciplinary research and development efforts. The internship includes opportunities for professional development, networking, and contributing to impactful projects that benefit the energy sector and society.
Project-Specific Responsibilities:
  • Support the integration of the Water Treatment Models with EPRI model environments and assist in generating actionable insights for plant operators.
  • Collaborate with EPRI staff to enhance and validate an AI framework that predicts water consumption across different WTPs and assess its applicability across three major projects.
  • Contribute to a comprehensive report synthesizing insights from existing water treatment projects. This report will support the development of a generalizable multi-objective optimization framework for improving WTP operations.
We are seeking highly motivated students in science and engineering disciplines who are eager to gain experience in the energy and water sectors. Relevant majors include, but are not limited to:
  • Mechanical, Electrical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Science, Data Science, or Applied Mathematics
  • Systems or Industrial Engineering or related technical fields
Typical Activities and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct literature reviews and document findings in written and visual formats
  • Collaborate with mentors and peers to address real-world technical challenges
  • Perform independent research and contribute to team-based problem-solving
  • Assist in data analysis, model validation, and technical reporting Preferred
Qualifications:
  • At least entering junior year of undergraduate studies; graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) are encouraged to apply
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Experience with data analysis, modeling, or control systems is a plus
  • Interest in AI applications and optimization techniques
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative research environment
Additional Information:
  • This is a part-time position with flexible hours during the academic year
  • Remote work is supported, though some in-person opportunities may be limited
  • Interns may be invited to continue in future semesters based on performance
The hourly rate range for Student positions are:
  • Undergraduate: $16-29 per hour
  • Masters: $25-31 per hour
  • Ph.D: $27-34 per hour

These ranges are an estimate, and the actual hourly rate may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The hourly rate may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI's Benefit Programs which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation, sick leave (except as set required by law) and holiday pay. However, as a Student employee you are eligible for the benefits of Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers' Compensation Insurance.
For Student positions which require one to relocate to an EPRI office. Relocation assistance is not provided and the student will be responsible for covering all relocation costs/expenses.
EPRI participates in E-Verify, an online system operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA). EPRI uses the system to check the work status of new hires by comparing information from the employee's I-9 form against SSA and Department of Homeland Security databases.
