The role utilizes high-frequency sound waves to assist medical personnel in detecting anatomical abnormalities. The technologist performs procedures according to departmental format, completing exams in the allotted time. Daily clerical duties include using electronic health records and scheduling systems. Portable ultrasound exams are performed as needed. Complex technical tasks include detecting anatomical abnormalities such as masses, abscesses, and stones. The technologist prepares medical supplies, instruments, and equipment for each procedure. Patients are prepared for diagnostic procedures, and the technologist explains the procedures and positions them for imaging. Evaluating and ensuring the technical quality of images is essential for obtaining and processing data. Records of ultrasounds taken must be maintained, including archiving and de-archiving data as required. Routine maintenance and calibration of equipment are performed to ensure proper functioning. Instruments, supplies, and equipment must be cleaned and sterilized, and supplies stocked as necessary. The technologist provides technical assistance and instruction to students and medical residents. The role requires lifting a minimum of 25 lbs., pushing and pulling a minimum of 50 lbs., and standing for a minimum of 6 hours a day. Patient greeting and care should be performed adhering to standards of behavior. Scheduled shifts include availability for holidays and weekends as needed. On-call assignments may be required according to departmental policy. The technologist must adhere to policies regarding employee identification and attendance. Identifying patient needs and modifying care delivery is necessary to accommodate age, culture, language, and other factors. Standards identified in organizational competencies must be followed.
