Summary

Under the direct administrative supervision of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service Chief, the Physician - General Physiatrist/Amputee Medical Director provides leadership and consultations for the outpatient amputee, TBI, and musculoskeletal clinics, as well as direct and comprehensive patient care to veterans involved in these clinics.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met previous qualification standards at initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
  • Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Physicians must have completed residency approved by ACGME, AOA, or equivalent.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work on a fee or intermittent basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Must meet physical standards, including a pre-employment physical exam and drug testing.
  • Physical requirements include lifting, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, kneeling, and visual and auditory capabilities.

Duties

  • Provide leadership in the Amputee PM&R program, including policy implementation, staff management, and compliance monitoring.
  • Monitor performance measures, ensure compliance with VA and Joint Commission standards, and participate in peer reviews.
  • Participate in staff recruitment, policy development, and interdisciplinary team activities to ensure quality care.
  • Lead educational initiatives for staff, patients, and families, and support staff certification efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with VHA standards on documentation, workload, and ethical practice.
  • Assist with credentialing and licensure tracking, collaborating with HR for ongoing compliance.
  • Provide expert clinical care in physiatry, including evaluations, complex rehabilitative treatments, and prosthetic and orthotic prescriptions.
