Kaiser San Diego Medical Center (SDMC) is an adult anesthesia practice with a core team of pediatric anesthesia consultants performing 5-15% of their practice in pediatric anesthesia. Pediatric cases include general surgery, urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, GI, IR, and radiology, with approximately 10-20 neonatal cases per year from the NICU. SDMC has a pediatric floor but no PICU. Pediatric team members take one week of home pediatric call per month, during which they handle NICU cases, children under 1 year, or children under 14 with ASA 3 or higher. No CRNA supervision is provided for these pediatric cases.
About the Area

It also features diverse culinary and architectural landscapes influenced by its proximity to Mexico and Spanish history.
Working Here
The San Diego service area is extensive, with over 1,100 physicians and about 25 satellite offices supporting the main medical center. The culture emphasizes physician well-being, workforce cohesion, and patient engagement, fostering a collaborative environment with educational and research opportunities, including residency programs, fellowships, and clinical studies.
The Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine comprises over 70 physicians and 50 CRNAs practicing in a team model. Our group includes graduates from top training programs nationwide, with multiple physicians from each ACGME-accredited fellowship: Cardiothoracic, Critical Care, Obstetric, Pain, and Pediatric, plus specialists in Regional, Neuro, and Thoracic Anesthesia. All are Diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
In San Diego, the practice includes a wide range of inpatient and outpatient surgeries across all specialties except Cardiac, Trauma, and Transplant. The anesthesia practice involves bread-and-butter pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, thoracic, and orthopedic surgery, as well as outpatient procedures in gastroenterology and interventional radiology. Night call duties are shared evenly among partners, with approximately 30% supervising CRNAs and 70% performing cases. Typically, only one resident works at the main hospital.
Recent growth includes the opening of the San Diego Medical Center in 2017 and a new hospital in San Marcos in August 2023. There are six operating sites, including three hospitals and three outpatient centers, with travel expected between Otay and San Marcos, making central living advantageous.
