Kaiser San Diego Medical Center (SDMC) specializes in adult anesthesia, with a core pediatric anesthesia team performing 5-15% of cases in pediatric anesthesia, including surgeries in general, urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery, oncology, GI, IR, and radiology. The center handles approximately 10-20 neonatal NICU cases annually. SDMC has a pediatric ward but no PICU. Pediatric team members take one week of home pediatric call monthly, covering NICU cases, children under 1 year, or children under 14 with ASA 3 or higher; these cases do not require CRNA supervision.

It boasts diverse culinary scenes and architecture influenced by its proximity to Mexico and Spanish heritage.
Working Here
The San Diego service area is extensive, with over 1,100 physicians and about 25 satellite offices complementing the main medical center. The culture emphasizes physician well-being, team cohesion, and patient engagement, supported by advanced technology, clinical expertise, and research opportunities, including residency programs and clinical trials.
The Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative and Pain Medicine comprises over 70 physicians and 50 CRNAs practicing in a team model. Our physicians come from top training programs nationwide, with multiple specialists in cardiothoracic, critical care, obstetric, pain, and pediatric anesthesia, among others. All are Diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
In San Diego, anesthesia practice includes a wide range of surgeries across all subspecialties except cardiac, trauma, and transplant. Typical cases involve pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, general surgery, neurosurgery, vascular, thoracic, and orthopedic surgeries, along with outpatient procedures in gastroenterology and radiology. Night call duties are shared evenly, with approximately 30% supervising CRNAs and 70% performing cases. Usually, only one resident is present at the main hospital.
Our growth has been significant, with the opening of the San Diego Medical Center in 2017 and another facility in San Marcos in August 2023. We operate across six sites, including three hospitals and three outpatient centers, with travel expected between Otay and San Marcos; living centrally is advantageous.
