The Neurosurgeon will work with other members of Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide clinical services and is expected to participate in team activities aimed at delivering high standards of clinical practice and expertise. The role involves performing surgeries on the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves, analyzing test results, and determining the best treatment or procedures for inpatient and outpatient neurosurgical patients.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations to identify neurological disorders.
- Interpret diagnostic tests such as CAT scans, MRI's, EEG's, myelograms, bone scans, and perform procedures like biopsies, cerebral angiograms, lumbar punctures, ventriculostomies to develop treatment plans.
- Implement therapeutic interventions when appropriate.
- Operate on patients with diseases of the brain, central nervous system, and peripheral nerves.
- Prescribe medications and recommend dietary and physical activity programs for recovery.
- Handle hospital duties including consultations, admissions, treatment planning, operative reports, discharge planning, and summaries.
- Assist in planning neurosurgery services at SMC and maintain high standards of patient care.
- Participate in research studies as appropriate.
- Contribute to the training of junior medical staff.
Requirements
- Degree from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited neurosurgery residency program.
- Passing the written exam prior to residency completion (Board Eligible).
- Board Certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery within the allowed timeframe.
- Maintain a controlled drug prescription certificate.
- Hold a valid medical license in the practicing state.
