Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify, candidates must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in the U.S.
- Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, including ACGME, AOA, or equivalent non-US programs with verified practice in the U.S.
- Residents enrolled in accredited programs are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they perform certain duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology; eligibility for faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico.
- Preferred: Distinguished record in clinical care.
- Physical requirements as per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Duties
- Perform initial histories and physical exams on outpatients.
- Provide ongoing outpatient care.
- Screen outpatients for further care needs.
- Prescribe medications within scope.
- Order diagnostic studies (labs, x-rays, EKGs).
- Promote health and disease prevention.
- Coordinate consultations and special tests.
- Educate patients and families in preventive care and treatments.
- Attend staff, team, and committee meetings; participate in peer reviews.
- Mentor Medical Residents in outpatient care management.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (to be discussed with supervisor).
