Job Description Incumbents serve as experts and have statewide responsibility in conducting, supervising and/or directing medico-legal investigations and examinations, including autopsies and examinations on deceased individuals whose deaths fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Medical Examiner. Incumbents prepare written reports regarding case findings, including the interpretation and findings, and issues official death certificate and final report ruling as to cause and manner of death. Coordinates ancillary testing, explaining results to families, law enforcement personnel and attorneys. Provides expert testimony in court, depositions, pre-trial reviews and other proceedings.

Principle Job Duties:
Performs and/or supervises the performance of autopsies, gross and histological examinations of surgical specimens, and microscopic examinations, evaluates all data and prepares reports of findings. Certifies the cause and manner of death and prepares final reports of cases which includes reports of investigations of death. Provides expert testimony in courts of law, pre-trial reviews and other proceedings as an expert witness. Assists in teaching concepts of forensic medicine to medical students, pathology residents, law enforcement, medical and other personnel. Conducts lectures and other educational presentations to law enforcement, medical, legal and other professional groups.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must hold an MD degree, DO degree (or foreign equivalent with ECFMG certification), be board certified in anatomic pathology, be board eligible or board certified in forensic pathology, and be eligible for a Utah State medical license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Has American Board of Pathology (ABP) certifications in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology. Has ABP certification in neuropathology, cardiac pathology, or pediatric pathology. Has excellent verbal and written communication skills. Has an interest in teaching or academic research. Has at least 2 years of experience as a forensic pathologist.
