Incumbents serve as experts and have statewide responsibility in conducting, supervising and/or directing medico-legal investigations and examinations, including autopsies and examinations on deceased individuals whose deaths fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Medical Examiner. Incumbents prepare written reports regarding case findings, including the interpretation and findings, and issue official death certificates and final reports on the cause and manner of death. They coordinate ancillary testing, explain results to families, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys. They also provide expert testimony in court, depositions, pre-trial reviews, and other proceedings.

Principal Job Duties:

  • Performs and/or supervises autopsies, gross and histological examinations of surgical specimens, and microscopic examinations, evaluates all data, and prepares reports of findings.

  • Certifies the cause and manner of death and prepares final reports, including investigations of death.

  • Provides expert testimony in courts of law, pre-trial reviews, and other proceedings as an expert witness.

  • Assists in teaching forensic medicine concepts to medical students, pathology residents, law enforcement, and other personnel.

  • Conducts lectures and educational presentations to law enforcement, medical, legal, and professional groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent with ECFMG certification), board certified in anatomic pathology, and either board eligible or certified in forensic pathology. Must be eligible for a Utah State medical license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • American Board of Pathology (ABP) certifications in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology.

  • Additional certifications in neuropathology, cardiac pathology, or pediatric pathology are a plus.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Interest in teaching or academic research.

  • At least 2 years of forensic pathology experience preferred.

  • Completion of an ACGME-approved fellowship in forensic Pathology.
  • American Board of Pathology certification in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology (within two years of hiring).
  • Completion of an ACGME-approved residency in Anatomic or Anatomic/Clinical Pathology.
  • Current unrestricted medical license in Utah.
  • Ability to work around operating machinery, contagious diseases, or hazardous chemicals.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, reach, lift up to 50 lbs., and perform related activities.
