Communications Manager

to lead and oversee all facets of the organization’s communications and marketing efforts. This position will manage the Communications Associate and work closely with staff across departments to ensure our messaging is consistent, impactful, and aligned with our mission. Position Summary: The Communications Manager will drive the strategic direction of Cure JM’s communications and serve as a unifying voice across our marketing, digital, and educational outreach efforts. This individual will supervise the Communications Associate and be responsible for planning, reviewing, and refining all major communications campaigns and materials. They will ensure Cure JM’s message reaches patients, families, physicians, donors, and the broader public in a clear, engaging, and inspiring way to advance our goals in research, education, family support, and fundraising. Key Responsibilities Include: Strategic Leadership (35%) Serve as Cure JM’s brand gatekeeper, ensuring all communications reflect the organization’s mission and visual identity.

Develop and lead a comprehensive communications strategy to engage families, donors, clinicians, researchers, and supporters. Collaborate with program and development staff to align communications with fundraising, family outreach, and medical engagement priorities. Measure and report communications outcomes open rates, clicks, engagement, etc.) and adjust strategies to optimize performance. Track and report engagement metrics such as event participation, donor activity, and audience interactions to inform strategy. Establish and sustain organized systems for communications planning, execution, and archiving to support long-term consistency and scalability.

Team Management (20%) Supervise and support the Communications Associate, providing guidance, mentoring, and quality control. Oversee content calendars and ensure timely, consistent delivery of newsletters, social media, website updates, and reports. Set and review performance goals in alignment with organizational priorities.

Content Oversight (25%) Review and edit major written and video content to ensure alignment with Cure JM’s tone, brand, and goals. Lead the development of flagship pieces such as the Annual Report, strategic messaging for new programs, and high-profile fundraising communications. Coordinate the storytelling pipeline to gather and feature family, donor, and clinician stories across platforms.

Media, Web, and Social (20%) Oversee website strategy and work of Website Administrator. Oversee the social media strategy and calendar as designed by the Communications Associate. Monitor industry trends to identify new communications opportunities and threats.

Requirements and Attributes: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or certifications in communications, marketing, journalism, nonprofit management, or related field preferred. 6+ years of experience in nonprofit or mission-driven communications. Prior supervisory or team leadership experience. Excellent writing, editing, and strategic planning skills. Experience overseeing content creation across email, digital, and social media platforms. Strong project management, time management, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience with or interest in rare diseases, healthcare, or medical nonprofits is a plus. Comfort using platforms like Mailchimp or Constant Contact, Canva, Google Workspace, and basic website CMS tools.

Location: This is a remote position. 4-day travel to Cure JM’s Family Conference, held every 24 months, is encouraged. Cure JM will cover reasonable travel expenses.
