A custodian, also known as a janitor or maintenance worker, is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and order of a building or facility, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for its occupants. This involves a range of tasks, including cleaning, sanitizing, minor repairs, and security checks. Custodians perform routine cleaning tasks like sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal. They also clean and sanitize restrooms, kitchens, and other common areas. They ensure surfaces are properly cleaned and sanitized, especially in restrooms and high-touch areas, to prevent the spread of germs. Custodians may be responsible for fixing minor issues like replacing light bulbs, repairing leaky faucets, or patching minor damage. Security: They may be responsible for locking doors, closing windows, and setting alarms to ensure the building is secure after hours. Custodians may also maintain outdoor areas, including sidewalks, lawns, and entrances. They ensure supplies like soap, paper towels, and toilet paper are replenished in restrooms and other areas. Custodians collect and dispose of trash and recycling materials. Knowledge of cleaning procedures, chemicals, and equipment. Physical stamina: Custodians need to be able to stand, walk, and lift for extended periods. Attention to detail: A keen eye for detail is important for identifying areas that need cleaning or maintenance. Time management: Custodians need to be able to prioritize tasks and manage their time effectively. They should be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff. Ability to work independently: Custodians often work independently, so they need to be able to follow instructions and complete tasks without constant supervision.
