The University of Notre Dame Operations, Events, and Safety

(UOES) division is currently hiring for multiple on-call/temporary positions at

South Dining Hall

in our Campus Dining department. The UOES division oversees the University's event management, hospitality, and customer service functions, while also supporting student life, academic initiatives, research activities, and annual milestone celebrations.

Cook

The Cook supports daily operations as part of the culinary production team. This person is responsible for completing assignments related to food preparation, assembly, cooking, and sanitation through standards of service and hospitality.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepare and cook a wide variety of menu items, including but not limited to entrees, sides, soups, and desserts, following standardized recipes and production sheets for large-scale dining operations

Ensure all food is prepared and served in accordance with established food safety and sanitation guidelines and university health department regulations

Monitor food quality, taste, and presentation, making adjustments as needed to maintain high standards and student satisfaction

Operate and maintain a variety of kitchen equipment, including ovens, grills, fryers, slicers, and mixers, in a safe and efficient manner

Assist with inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating food products to minimize waste and ensure freshness

Maintain a clean and organized work area, including food preparation stations, cooking equipment, and storage areas.

Dining Service Associate

The Dining Service Associate (DSA) is a “front-of-house” position. This person is responsible for ensuring all diners feel welcome by providing a warm, friendly atmosphere and being responsive to the changing needs and desires of customers. The DSA will complete general assignments related to the preparation, presentation, service and clean-up of food production and service through standards of service and hospitality.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide friendly and efficient customer service to students, faculty, staff, and guests in a high-volume dining hall environment

Efficiently serve food items to patrons, ensuring appropriate portion sizes and appealing presentation

Assist with food service by setting up serving lines, restocking food items, and ensuring all stations are clean and well-presented

Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in dining areas, including wiping down tables, chairs, and serving surfaces regularly

Assist with basic food preparation tasks as directed, such as portioning items, slicing bread, or preparing beverages

Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper hygiene, glove usage, and temperature monitoring, to ensure the health and safety of diners.

Help with inventory management by receiving deliveries, stocking shelves, and organizing storage areas

Culinary Service Associate

The Culinary Service Associate (CSA) is a “back-of-house” position. This position is critical to ensuring all diners experience excellent food production and service. This person is responsible for cleaning kitchen equipment, removing trash, cleaning floors and ceiling tiles, assisting with set-up and operation of the dish room, and participating in other general assignments.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain the cleanliness and visual appeal of serving lines, food displays, and condiment stations throughout service hours

Assist with basic food preparation tasks such as washing and cutting vegetables, portioning ingredients, preparing simple salads, or assembling sandwiches/wraps as directed by culinary staff

Monitor and replenish food items on serving lines, ensuring a continuous supply and alerting cooks to low stock

Operate and maintain basic kitchen equipment safely, such as toasters, warmers, beverage dispensers, and coffee machines

Clean and sanitize workstations, serving utensils, and equipment before, during, and after shifts

Assist with dishwashing duties, including scraping, loading, and unloading the dish machine, and proper storage of clean dishware

Support inventory management by assisting with the receiving, rotating, and proper storage of food and supplies.

Monitor

The Monitor welcomes guests and assists in supporting the mission and goals of a “Best in Class” dining program. This “front-of-house” position is critical to ensuring all diners feel welcome by providing a warm, friendly atmosphere and being responsive to the needs of our guests. This person is responsible for verifying student eligibility for meal service, monitoring overcrowding, preventing unauthorized individuals from entering or guests from exiting with excessive food, and maintaining cleanliness of the dining hall.

Key Responsibilities:

Greet and welcome students, faculty, staff, and guests upon entry to the dining hall in a friendly and professional manner

Verify meal plans, student IDs, or other authorized access for all individuals entering the dining hall, ensuring proper entry protocols are followed

Monitor dining room activity to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment, promptly addressing any spills, hazards, or disruptive behavior

Circulate throughout the dining area, assisting patrons with general inquiries, directing them to different stations, or addressing minor concerns

Ensure compliance with dining hall policies, such as "no outside food" or proper waste disposal, politely reminding patrons as needed

Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of dining tables and chairs during service hours, wiping down surfaces as needed

Report any equipment malfunctions, maintenance issues, or significant incidents to dining hall management immediately

Support the overall dining experience by maintaining a visible and helpful presence, contributing to a positive atmosphere

Qualifications: Qualifications

Capable of managing time effectively with minimal supervision

Positive, respectful, and committed to the schedule you create

Excellent communication and listening skills

Ability to maintain a standing position for extended periods of time (up to 6 hours at a time).

Ability to move around the café to attend to the needs of guests

Ability to move, lift and handle equipment, supplies and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Ability to position self to move items weighing up to 25 pounds from floor to shelves and cabinets above and below counter height

Follow food safety procedures for handling, storing, and serving food products
