Description
Assists skilled tradespersons in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the county water system, and the general care and maintenance of surrounding grounds, buildings and other structures; and performs other related duties.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its continuing responsibility for assisting a variety of skilled trade workers in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the county water system and the general care of the surrounding grounds, buildings and other structures by performing semi-skilled and manual tasks in a variety of skilled trades. Examples of Duties
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position and are consistent with the class concept.
Assists skilled tradespersons in a variety of waterworks projects. Assists the welder in repair of water tanks and other welding tasks. Assists the carpenter in roofing and in the building of forms for concrete slabs, pillars, meter and valve boxes, driveways, tile and rock walls; repairs building structures and water system facilities. Assists with maintenance work in repair of water tanks; repairs seals, gaskets, and screens. Prepares a variety of surfaces for painting. Paints protective coating on water tanks with a brush, roller or spray. Repairs and patches concrete water tanks and reservoirs, Pressure washes inside and outside of tanks Cleans, repairs, and maintains intake pipes and flumes. Repairs or replaces fence posts and fence wires. Maintains surrounding grounds maintenance at tank sites. Uses a variety of hand tools, power tools, and gas driven equipment in the performance of work. Operates a motor vehicle in transporting personnel, materials and supplies and equipment to and from work site. Hikes on trails, carrying tools, materials and equipment to inspect, maintain and repair remote water systems, facilities, including flume repair and maintenance. Performs manual tasks such as digging footings, excavates driveways by hand when machinery cannot access area; loads truck when necessary. Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience under a journey level carpenter, mason, painter, pipefitter, plumber, or welder, involving the construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, structures and equipment.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3)
Knowledge of: common practices , tools, equipment, and materials used in the various trades of carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, and welding; occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures.
Ability to: use hand and power tools utilized in a variety of skilled trades; operate hand and power equipment and tools used in skilled trades; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationship with others; follow safety rules, practices and procedures.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
