Introduction

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a department under Maryland's Executive Branch. Formed in 1972 by the Maryland General Assembly to address the agriculture needs for the State of Maryland, the Department oversees and serves as a regulatory body for animal health, consumer services to include marketing and lab services, plant and pest management and resource conservation. As the number one industry in Maryland, the diversity of agriculture programs in the State continue to expand and grow.

The Plant Protection and Weed Management Section conducts inspection, and offers educational programs that protect the health of plants and honey bees in Maryland. Personnel in this section serve as the State's authorities on plant pests and agricultural quarantines, and provide liaison for the Department with other state and federal regulatory officials regarding these issues.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Based out of MDA Headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking two field technicians to assist in survey and detection for invasive insect pests. Duties include surveys of insects and maintenance of insect traps throughout Maryland, accurate data collection and use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers. Work may also involve interactions with the public. Training will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid license to drive in Maryland (with no more than 5 points on driving record).

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with biological field work including but not limited to: Surveys of insects Maintenance of insect traps Data collection Use of equipment such as GPS units and personal computers.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland (with no more than 5 points on driving record).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Work will involve exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperatures & humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment when applicable.
