SSRAA's mission is to enhance and rehabilitate salmon production in southern Southeast Alaska to the optimum social and economic benefit of salmon users.
Whitman Lake Hatchery Maintenance Supervisor
Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting a maintenance supervisor at the Whitman Lake & Deer Mountain Hatcheries in Ketchikan, Alaska. The Whitman Lake Hatchery program operates both hatcheries producing chinook and coho salmon, is a central incubation facility for summer chum, and manages four remote spring rearing camps in the region. Desired skills include proficiency in: carpentry, welding, plumbing, basic electrical, maintaining preventative maintenance records, use of hand and power tools, and project planning. In addition to maintenance responsibilities, this position may, on occasion, assist with various fish culture activities and will be expected to perform other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to develop healthy working relationships with vendors, contractors, co-workers, other SSRAA departments, and have the willingness to share knowledge and skills. The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain an Alaska Driver's License and all applicants may undergo a background check. Summary of Position:
Under the direct supervision of the Hatchery Manager, this position performs or supervises the required maintenance and construction operations at the Hatchery. Activities and priorities are coordinated with the Hatchery Manager and the SSRAA Facilities Engineer. Responsibilities include performance of preventative maintenance program, repairs as needed to equipment and facilities, construction and fabrication projects as assigned, and maintaining an adequate parts and supplies inventory.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Organize and record maintenance schedules on equipment. Perform and supervise preventative maintenance work, scheduled and unscheduled. Perform and supervise repairs to equipment and facility. Order supplies and parts needed for repair and maintenance. Provide maintenance and repair summaries to the Hatchery Manager on a regular basis. Provide input on maintenance and repair needs for annual and mid-year budget documents. Train personnel in proper maintenance and repair techniques. Perform other duties as assigned. Will include fish culture duties. Requirements
Skills & Abilities Required:
Mechanical, welding, carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills. Boat handling. Equipment operation. Hydraulics. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferable, but not required skills and experience:
Drafting. Computer networking. Electronic repair. Hydroelectric power production. Core Competencies:
Belief in SSRAA's mission statement. Must be able to multi-task. Must be able to recognize critical components of a process and adapt as needed. Ability to work as a team and be a problem solver. Maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
Reporting to this position:
Up to 3 Maintenance technicians.
Physical demands:
Often work in cold, wet conditions. Ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds and do repetitive physical labor.
Work environment:
Often requires work in inclement weather and significant time at a desk.

Job requires travel by boat and plane to remote areas. Work schedule will often include weekends.
