The Controller will manage all aspects of the firm’s financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, efficient internal controls, and financial analysis. This role requires expertise in accounting, budgeting, financial forecasting, and compliance in the context of a boutique law firm. The Controller will collaborate with partners and senior management to provide insights into the firm’s financial performance and assist with strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide insights to improve firm profitability and cash flow. Ensure compliance with accounting standards (GAAP or other relevant standards). Monitor accounts payable and receivable to ensure timely processing and collections. Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and manage annual budgets for the firm, ensuring alignment with business goals. Prepare financial forecasts and projections. Perform variance analysis between actual and budgeted performance. Cash Flow Management: Monitor and manage firm cash flow to ensure the firm meets its financial obligations. Oversee billing, collections, and payment processing for clients and vendors. Internal Controls & Compliance: Develop and implement financial controls to safeguard the firm’s assets. Ensure compliance with tax regulations, law firm-specific industry regulations, and other applicable laws. Coordinate the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors. Financial Strategy & Consultation: Provide strategic advice on financial planning, resource allocation, and cost-saving measures. Collaborate with senior leadership to align financial strategy with the firm's growth objectives. Analyze the firm's profitability by practice area, partner, or client to guide decision-making. Staff Management: Ensure the team and vendors are effectively handling accounts, payroll, tax filings, and other financial processes. Be the point person for HR and IT department heads.
Qualifications
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or equivalent preferred). Minimum of 5 years of accounting or finance experience, ideally within a law firm or professional services environment. Experience in managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and audits. Skills & Knowledge: Strong knowledge of financial management and accounting principles. Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Juris, Elite, Aderant, or similar). Familiarity with law firm billing practices, including time and expense tracking. High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial tools. Ability to analyze complex financial data and present findings in a clear and concise manner. Strong understanding of tax laws and regulations applicable to law firms. Personal Characteristics: Strong organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in financial reporting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Compensation & Benefits
$140-180K salary commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package (health insurance, 401(k), paid time off, etc.). In-office, with a select day or two to work from home. Parking paid. Professional development opportunities.
