Job Summary:

The Chief Mechanical Fleet Officer (CMFO) is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and technical management of a company’s mechanical fleet, including vehicles, equipment, and associated systems. The CMFO ensures optimal performance, safety, compliance, cost-efficiency, and sustainability of all fleet operations through proactive maintenance, innovation, and workforce development.

Job Classification:

Full-time non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Location:

St. Petersburg, FL, Headquarters office with a portion of time in the field.

Pay Range : $150k to $170K

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic & Operational Leadership

Develop and execute fleet management strategies aligned with organizational goals. Lead the planning and budgeting for fleet maintenance, replacements, and upgrades. Drive initiatives for fleet modernization, emissions reduction, and operational efficiency.

Fleet Maintenance & Technical Oversight

Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs for all fleet vehicles and equipment. Ensure compliance with mechanical safety standards, environmental regulations, and OEM guidelines. Manage workshops, service centers, and mobile repair operations.

Personnel & Team Management

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff. Establish performance metrics, conduct evaluations, and ensure ongoing technical training. Promote a safety-first culture across all maintenance and operations teams.

Asset & Inventory Management

Oversee lifecycle management of all mechanical assets, including procurement, utilization, and disposal. Manage parts inventory, supply chain relationships, and vendor contracts.

Compliance & Reporting

Ensure adherence to transportation laws, health and safety codes, and regulatory standards. Monitor KPIs and produce detailed reports on fleet performance, downtime, costs, and risks.

Technology & Innovation

Champion the adoption of fleet management systems (FMS), telematics, and diagnostic technologies. Collaborate with IT and data teams to enhance real-time tracking, predictive maintenance, and analytics.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred). Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification (preferred). Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in fleet maintenance or mechanical operations, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

ASE Master Technician Certification (Automotive or Truck Series – ASE) Certified Equipment Manager (CEM) – Association of Equipment Management Professionals Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) – NAFA Fleet Management Association Certified Public Fleet Professional (CPFP) – American Public Works Association (for public sector roles) OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification – Safety and compliance management DOT Compliance Training – For fleets regulated by FMCSA or DOT Project Management Professional (PMP) – For managing complex fleet or maintenance projects Lean Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt) – Process improvement and operational efficiency Certified Sustainable Fleet Professional (CSFP) – Environmental and sustainability best practices (optional)

Skills & Competencies:

Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Expertise in heavy vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, and workshop management. Proficiency in fleet management software and telematics. Budgeting, cost control, and asset lifecycle planning. Deep understanding of safety, environmental, and transportation regulations. Analytical mindset with ability to solve complex mechanical and logistical challenges.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

Office-based with frequent visits to workshops, garages, and operational sites. May require occasional travel and extended hours during emergencies or operational demands. Ability to inspect vehicles and equipment, which may involve physical activity.
