Controller Location:
downtown Washington, DC Hybrid:
In-office Tuesday through Thursday; remote Monday and Friday A small, privately held architecture firm headquartered in Washington, DC is seeking a Controller to lead and elevate its finance and accounting function. With a nearly century-long track record, strong cash reserves, and no debt, the firm offers a stable foundation and a culture rooted in design excellence and thoughtful growth. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity stepping into a role previously held for nearly two decades. The ideal candidate will bring operational maturity, deliver executive-level financial insights, and collaborate closely with firm leadership and a loyal, highly tenured team to support both daily operations and long-term strategic planning. Key Responsibilities: Hands-on leadership of day-to-day accounting, finance, and reporting operations Manage two direct reports (billing, payroll, operational accounting, and admin) Deliver financial reporting, forecasting, and executive-level financial summaries Collaborate with external CPA firm on tax strategy for flow-through entities Deliver cash management insights and support strategic decision-making Support the potential migration from Deltek Ajera to a new ERP system Serve as a financial partner to firm leadership, bringing clarity and structure to priorities Ensure a clean year-end close and readiness for September 30 fiscal year-end Qualifications: CPA strongly preferred Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline Experience as a financial leader or strong #2 within a professional services firm (Architecture, Design, Engineering, Legal, etc.) Public accounting foundation (ideally middle market) with exposure to both audit and tax Understanding of tax implications for a cash-basis, flow-through PLLC Ability to produce executive-level summaries and communicate with firm leadership Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to improve processes while maintaining respect for a loyal and experienced team Familiarity with Deltek Ajera or similar project-based accounting systems Experience with ERP/system transitions is a plus Working Style & Culture Fit: This firm values collaboration, institutional knowledge, and stability. The right candidate will bring structure and ideas for improvement—while earning trust, listening, and leading with integrity. This is a hands-on leadership role, not a command-and-control position.
