Animal Control Officer
The City of Deer Park is seeking an Animal Control Officer to enforce city animal control ordinances, pick up live and dead animals to keep the city free of road hazards and stray animals. Salary: $21.04 Hourly Location: Deer Park, TX Job Type: Support Job Number: 01058 Department: Police Department Division: Animal Shelter Opening Date: 12/31/2024 Enforces City animal control ordinances, picks up live and dead animals to keep City free of road hazards and stray animals. Works under the supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor. Supervision exercised: None. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Respond to citizen calls to pick up strays, dangerous or dead animals, including domestic animals, livestock, snakes and other wild animals. Investigate bites and confiscate the animal if necessary. Remove dead animals from the road, pick up live or dead animals in any situation warranting removal of an animal using catch pole or leash. Enforce the animal control ordinances by investigating bites, informing citizens of laws, appearing in court on behalf of the City, logging all calls and activities, and writing reports. Work in the Animal Shelter to take calls, feed and water the animals, clean cages and euthanize animals when necessary. Peripheral Duties: Assist the Police and/or Fire Departments in the removal of live animals in emergency situations or the removal of dead animals as a result of fire. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year experience with animals as an animal control officer. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of euthanasia, tranquilizer and other chemicals used. Also, ability to complete analysis reports. Special Requirements: (A) Texas Operator's License and State Certification as an Animal Control Officer. (B) Keep up with required certification and continuing Education. Tools and Equipment Used: Safety toed shoes, lift belts, gloves, rubber boots, radio, telephone, computer, catch pole, leash and syringe. Physical Demands: Pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, bending, twisting, crouching and handling. Work Environment: Required to work outdoors, subject to adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to diseases. Exposure to physical hazards such as risk from wild or dangerous animals and work sometimes performed in traffic. Exposure to loud to moderate noise from dogs barking in Shelter. Confront people who are hostile due to a situation surrounding a particular law violation.
