Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Refining Engineer
Process Unit Engineer to support its Dickinson Renewable Diesel Facility located in North Dakota. Process Unit Engineers provide technical support for plant operations. They will be assigned a specific unit or units within the Refinery with responsibilities of daily monitoring and troubleshooting of their areas, process optimization, and development of small capital projects / modifications to existing units. Engineers will apply state-of-the-art technology with regard to process simulation and optimization, recommend programs and procedures to increase the economic efficiency of refining operations, and work in a team environment with line operators and other engineers to maintain and troubleshoot control system problems as well as develop advanced control applications for their process units. Process engineers work in a team environment with unit operators and engineers of other disciplines to maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize existing refinery assets. Process engineers will track emerging technology and will interface with corporate refining technologists to help determine future operating strategies and investments. This position reports to the Process Engineering Manager and will be based in Dickinson, ND. Key Responsibilities: Support unit operation through daily process monitoring
Communicate unit performance, optimization opportunities, and environmental performance. Assist troubleshooting efforts with unit upsets, product quality incidents, not meeting production plans, etc. Key Performance Indicators (KPI) included as part of routine reporting (WABT curve, fouling, chemical and catalyst budgets, yields, etc.) Manage catalyst performance and coordinate catalyst change timing Review / approve vendor chemical programs Work with the Lab to request more samples for troubleshooting Provide after-hours support when appropriate
emergency call out Daily interaction / communication with Board Operators. Understand regulatory control logic and any Advanced Multi-variable Process Control applications (APC) Alarm rationalization participation Develop and support implementation of small to medium capital projects Provide justification, develop project economics, and present to management Develop justification and work scope for TAR and routine maintenance
specifically catalyst changeout, exchanger cleaning, furnace pigging, etc. Support / review operating procedures for start-up and shutdown Inspect vessel internals for proper installation / tolerances of components Monitor / approve catalyst loading and provide special chemical procedures Participate in Process Technology Advisory Group calls/meetings. Work with Technologists to understand and implement unit best practices through unit health check-ups. Work with local and centralized Econ & Planning groups to set outside feedstock properties and evaluate opportunity feeds Identify constraints, set appropriate unit targets, and drive implementation with Operations Monitor accuracy of Linear Programming (LP) model yields and recommend changes Critical Process Variables/ Not to Exceed (CPV/NTE) Maintenance and Operating Limits support Lead/Participate in the MOC process Perform environmental calculations (leaks, maximum intended inventory, etc.) Lead incident investigations for process related events Participate in unit hazard reviews (What-Ifs, HAZOPs) Support instrumentation Process Safety Information (PSI) and troubleshooting (thermowell calculations, orifices, etc.) Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering required. One or more years of experience as a process engineer in the refining or petrochemical industry preferred. A valid Drivers License is required upon hire. Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
