Chemical Process Engineer

The Marathon Kenai Alaska Refinery has an opening for a Chemical Process Engineer. This position provides technical support for plant operations. They will be assigned a specific unit or units within the Refinery with responsibilities of daily monitoring and troubleshooting of their areas, process optimization, and design and development of capital projects as well as major modifications to existing units. Process Engineers will utilize process simulation and optimization to recommend programs and procedures to increase the economic efficiency of refining operations, and work in a team environment with operators and other engineers to maintain and troubleshoot control system problems. The hours of the position will be 9/80 schedule, after hours calls are required only occasionally and support of TAR once every three years. Key Responsibilities Provide troubleshooting and optimization assistance for Operations. Conduct routine performance monitoring including energy consumption, yields and "process unit health" performance indicators. Generates, analyzes, interprets, acts upon and disseminates these performance indicators and unit operations data for assigned units. Evaluate catalyst usage and performance. Identify long-term improvement opportunities to improve unit(s) profitability and optimize efficiency. Conduct process operations analysis and economic evaluation using simulation software or engineering calculations. Review findings with refinery management and secures approval to implement. Exercise judgment in equipment design and process development to compromise between process requirements, economics, operator effectiveness and environment/safety objectives. Provide technical input into development and implementation of operating manuals, Management of Change (MOC) development, hazard and operability reviews (HAZOPs) and piping and instrumentation diagram/drawing (P&ID) verification. Work with refinery's Economics and Planning group to ensure unit constraints and yields are accurately reflected in refinery's linear programming model and communicate individual unit's economic drivers to Operations and refinery management. Perform process engineering activities in all project phases including feasibility/economic studies, conceptual design, identification and evaluation of alternatives, front-end design, detailed engineering, construction, and startup/commissioning. Education, Experience and Skills Minimum Qualifications Must have at least a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution. Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date (Degree must be accredited in US.) Must have at least 1 year of experience as an Engineer in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry. Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook. Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. Must have physical ability to perform all essential job duties such as work may be conducted during periods of inclement weather. Must have physical ability to access all areas of the refinery including use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect critical process and mechanical equipment. Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.) Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card. Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship. Travel Requirement is 5% or less. On rare occasions must be available to respond to upset conditions year during off-hours and work extended hours, including nights and weekends in process operations environment. Preferred Qualifications More than 1 year of experience as an Engineer in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry is preferred. Relocation is available. This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level.
