Utilities Mechanic III

The City of New Port Richey is seeking a Utilities Mechanic III for the Public Works department. This full-time, non-exempt position offers a minimum starting rate of $19.14 hourly. Applications are required from city residents. For more information, visit

The primary role involves semi-skilled to skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water, reclaimed water, and sewage systems, including the operation of construction equipment for utility system construction and maintenance. Key responsibilities include: Participates in the installation, maintenance, or repair of water, reclaimed water, sewage collection systems, including valves and meters. Taps water, reclaimed water, and sewer lines, flushes and maintains fire hydrants, cuts pipes, and operates pumps. Uses tapping machines, concrete saws, metal detectors, handsaws, pliers, shovels, and wrenches. Maintains manholes, operates line-clearing equipment. Operates backhoe, trencher, and other types of equipment. Maintains lift stations, repairs pumps, troubleshoots control logic problems. Maintains inventory of parts on service truck; drives service truck and has the ability to communicate effectively using a two-way radio. Reads blueprints, as-builts, and atlases. Records work activities. Turns on or off and repairs meters; discusses water or wastewater service problems with users in accordance with city policy. Locates lines and fittings. Maintains areas around lift stations and other facilities. Operates tractor, mowers, and related grounds maintenance equipment. Loads, transports, and unloads equipment. Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment. Also may be asked to test, inspect, and install backflow devices for compliance to regulations; maintains records, files, and documentation. Assists in enforcement of the City's Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention Program. Performs related work as required. Minimum qualifications include knowledge of water distribution, reclaimed water, wastewater collection systems, plumbing, or irrigation system construction and repair methods, as well as familiarity with SCADA Utility systems, Microsoft Office software, and ESRI GIS software. The position requires a valid Florida Commercial Drivers (CDL) Class B with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement, and an FDEP Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector Certification within one year of employment. This role is considered essential personnel and requires availability for emergency situations such as floods, hurricanes, and other crises. Physical demands include transitioning from indoor to outdoor environments, lifting up to 80 pounds, and frequently bending, climbing, stooping, squatting, and walking. Sensory requirements include the ability to hear, speak, and understand conversation in English, as well as the ability to see, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols. The work environment includes working in confined spaces, near high voltage, and along roadways with common vehicle and pedestrian conflicts.
