This is a reality for AbbVie Interns. Comparative Medicine clinical veterinarians deliver care to a variety of species, including nonhuman primates, canines, zebrafish, ferrets and rodents. The Laboratory Animal Medicine Intern will work alongside clinical veterinarians and participate in all aspects of laboratory animal care which provides a unique opportunity to learn about drug discovery and preclinical research needs and development. In addition to standard care, students will learn common diseases, background strain information, how and why certain species are chosen as models for different research needs, and how to provide care to animals while on study. The intern will rotate with subject matter experts to take a deep dive into all areas of lab animal medicine including; behavioral management specific to each species, anatomic and clinical pathology, animal handling and dosing/sample collection techniques, standard equipment and modifications used in research (such as automated blood sampling systems), husbandry and care of large colonies of animals. The Laboratory Animal Medicine Intern will leave with a deep understanding of the regulations, guidelines and oversight of laboratory animal medicine, with a focus on industry specifics. Additionally, 1-2 weeks of the internship will be spent at the University of Illinois, Chicago to experience academic research models and work with a variety of other species including mini pigs, rabbits and baboons. Key responsibilities include: Clinical management of cases Husbandry duties, including basic care of animals and enrichment needs Clinical or scientific research project with a presentation at end of internship Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship Completed 2nd year of veterinary program Preferred Qualifications Exposure to research/ laboratory animal species Additional Information
