Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Metabolic Chamber and Device Technician in the Clinical Trials Unit. This role will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting metabolic chambers used to measure energy expenditure, metabolic rates, and related physiological parameters. The role requires a combination of technical expertise and attention to detail. In addition, this position may work with other technology and study devices (accelerometers, fitness trackers, etc.), and could be expected to conduct participant visits as needed. Major Responsibilities:
Operation and Maintenance:
Operate metabolic chambers according to standard protocols, ensuring precise calibration and optimal performance. Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on equipment as needed. Data Collection and Analysis:
Monitor and record participant activity, environmental conditions, and other study-specific variables. Ensure accurate collection of metabolic data (e.g., oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure). Assist with preliminary data analysis and preparation of reports for research teams. Participant Coordination:
Prepare chambers and related equipment for use with study participants. Support participants in understanding study requirements and ensure compliance with protocols during chamber use. Monitor participant safety and well-being while in the metabolic chamber. Compliance and Documentation:
Maintain detailed logs of equipment performance, maintenance, and calibration. Adhere to safety and ethical guidelines, including Institutional Review Board (IRB) and regulatory requirements. Ensure study protocols are followed rigorously and consistently. Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in physiology, biology, biomedical engineering, or a related field (preferred). Familiarity with physiological data collection and analysis software is an asset. Strong technical aptitude, including the ability to troubleshoot and resolve equipment issues. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively in a research or clinical setting, often collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Clear communication skills for interacting with participants and team members.
