Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee

The City of Hampton is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join us as Public Safety Dispatcher Trainees. This entry-level position offers hands-on training in answering 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching the appropriate emergency responders, and learning the vital skills needed to protect and serve. Minimum Qualifications Completion of a standard high school course of study or the GED. Ability to pass a standard critical testing procedure; must successfully complete the City of Hampton Public Safety Telecommunications Trainee program to include Call Taker, Fire and Police Telecommunications. Will be required to successfully complete a Police Department background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Must be able to successfully obtain an EMD/CPR certification within a specified length of time in accordance with internal guidelines and a VCIN certification within 6 months of employment. Additional Requirements Requires effective communication with internal and external customers. Position may require working nights, weekends, holidays and extended shifts as required. Incumbents are required to work in situations of extreme stress and in emergency, life threatening situations. The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules. Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in the use of personal computers; thorough knowledge of the city's geography; ability to speak clearly and distinctively over the radio; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to give clear, concise feedback; ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively with diverse groups; ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions. Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance.
