Role Summary Rivian Electrical R&D is the backbone of GSD (Getting Stuff Done!) for our Hardware teams. As Rivian continues to integrate major electrical systems and components, there are rapid growth and career advancement opportunities for those who thrive in challenges and a fast-paced, high-performance culture. Responsibilities Lead thermal strategy, conceptualize design, and perform numerical simulations to solve thermal design challenges for vehicle electrical hardware. Develop electronic cooling and packaging solutions for next-generation vehicle architectures and electronic systems. Define and support CFD best practices for electronic thermal management with high-power requirements. Optimize thermal and mechanical components by minimizing mass, cost, and material usage. Provide detailed design suggestions, including thermal stack-up, cooling layout, and material selection, to engineers responsible for vehicle electronics design. Coordinate analysis methodologies and design constraints across departments. Own and drive thermal methodologies, deliverables, and test specifications for modeling efforts. Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to achieve product and engineering excellence. Qualifications Masters Degree in Mechanical/Thermal Engineering or equivalent; PhD preferred. 4-6+ years experience in electronic cooling solutions, including heat sink design, fan development, and thermal interface materials evaluation. Deep understanding of conduction, convection, and radiation principles. Proficiency with CFD tools such as Flotherm, Ansys Icepack, Star CCM. Experience with flow and measurement techniques. Skilled in 3D CAD, scripting, and data analysis. Knowledge of failure analysis, product reliability, and validation procedures. Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams. Excellent communication and documentation skills in English. Additional Information Salary range for California-based applicants: $117,200 - $146,500, based on experience and other factors.
