Compensation: $110,000 – $160,000
Position Summary
The AI Policy Network (AIPN) is seeking a Director of Legislative Engagements to lead our outreach and advocacy on artificial intelligence (AI) policy in Washington, D.C. In this role, you will leverage your Capitol Hill experience and strong congressional relationships to advance AIPN’s mission of ensuring the United States is prepared for the opportunities and challenges of advanced AI, including the risk of increasingly powerful AI systems becoming uncontrollable. This is a mid-level position, ideal for an ambitious, proactive professional with a background in Congress and a passion for technology policy. The Director of Legislative Engagements will work closely with AIPN leadership to educate policymakers, influence legislation, and represent AIPN in public policy discussions, helping shape the future of AI governance in a mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute legislative engagement strategy: Craft and implement plans to advance AIPN’s AI policy priorities on Capitol Hill, including identifying key legislative opportunities and challenges.
- Monitor AI-related legislation and policy developments: Track federal legislation, committee hearings, and regulatory proposals on AI and provide timely analysis.
- Build and maintain congressional relationships: Cultivate strong, bipartisan relationships with members of Congress.
- Advocate and educate: Brief lawmakers, organize hearings, coordinate policy briefs, testimony, and talking points.
- Public engagement: Represent AIPN at events, panels, and media briefings on legislative aspects of AI governance.
- Collaborate internally with policy experts and researchers to align advocacy efforts.
- Rapid response and coordination on urgent legislative developments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree or JD a plus).
- 3–7 years of relevant experience in government relations or as congressional staff; Capitol Hill experience strongly preferred.
- Existing network of contacts on Capitol Hill; ability to work across the aisle.
- Strong understanding of AI policy issues and the congressional committees involved.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong political acumen.
- Highly organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
