Position Overview
One of Hawaii’s leading energy and fuel distribution companies is seeking an experienced Director of Human Resources to lead HR strategy and operations for its statewide network of retail locations. The role partners closely with senior leadership to align HR practices with business objectives, while managing a dedicated team and driving employee engagement, compliance, and talent development across a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a small HR team supporting the company’s retail division
- Align HR initiatives with business goals across talent acquisition, employee relations, training, and compliance
- Oversee compensation, benefits, performance management, and return-to-work programs
- Support field leaders (Retail Operations Specialists) with HR strategy and personnel matters
- Serve as a key advisor on organizational change, workforce planning, and process improvement
- Manage audits, HRIS functions, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Promote and uphold a strong organizational culture rooted in teamwork, respect, integrity, and purposeful work
Skills
- Strategic HR planning and leadership in a multi-site or retail environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills across all levels of an organization
- Deep knowledge of employment law, benefits, compliance, and employee relations
- Proficiency in HRIS platforms, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and process improvement practices
- Coaching, mentoring, and developing high-performing HR teams
- Ability to operate in fast-paced, high-compliance, 24/7 business environments
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive HR experience, including 7+ years in an HR Manager/Director role
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification is highly preferred
- Experience supporting retail, convenience store, or multi-unit field operations is strongly desired
- Familiarity with project management, succession planning, and process improvement methodologies (Lean/Six Sigma a plus)
- Must be open to occasional travel and able to support 24/7 operations when needed
