PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Administers and coordinates the health services program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification Requirements
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • Valid Texas Licensed Vocational Nurse License issued by the Texas Board of Nursing
  • Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to administer Hearing, Vision and Spinal Screenings required upon employment
  • Paraprofessional Certification, as required by the State Board and District
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check
Special Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to operate computer and use word processing, spreadsheet databases software
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and maintain confidential information
  • Ability to work under stressful and emotional circumstances with students who are medically fragile
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience in community health, hospital environment, physician's office, or school health or one-year internship with school district experience
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

  • Work under the direct supervision of Licensed Registered School Nurse
  • Provide basic care, minor first aide, and minor emergency care for ill and injured students and staff according to established District policy and procedures within the Licensed Vocational Nurse scope of practice
  • Conduct school health services, vision, hearing, and other such screenings as may be required
  • Dispense prescribed medication with doctor's orders and parent permission
  • Monitor immunization requirements
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students
  • Secure immediate medical care for students and staff in emergency situations
  • Contact the Licensed Registered School Nurse to matters of non-routine nature
  • Consult with the Licensed Registered School Nurse relative if unsure about policies, procedures, or protocols
  • Report situations requiring the Licensed Registered School Nurse's assessment and/or interventions to the Licensed Registered School Nurse immediately
  • Utilize a systematic approach to provide individualized, goal-oriented nursing care by collecting data and performing focused nursing assessments and implementing appropriate aspects of care within the Licensed Vocational Nurses scope of practice
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs
  • Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
  • Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
  • Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
  • Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
  • Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

  • Office equipment - personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position

  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands:
  • Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
  • Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds
Environmental Factors:
  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
  • Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
  • Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
