The Dental Assistant - Graduate Periodontics provides assistance to dental students, patients, faculty and staff and provides instruction to dental students and patients in accordance with the Clinic Operations Manual and standards of care in Dentistry.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide dental assistance and instruction to residents and students during the examination and treatment of patients and assistance to faculty during surgical procedures and dental emergencies including monitoring patient comfort, taking vital signs and assuring that clinic procedures are followed.

Assist dental students and faculty in the processing of paperwork related to the examination and treatment of patients.

Maintain and monitor cleanliness and sterilization of dental equipment and instruments per OSHA requirements.

Order and stock supplies using MUSoD Dental Store procedures.

Assist in the budget planning process.

Facilitate the patient billing process including preparing and submitting patient insurance forms and recording completed treatment. Check-out and monitor the return of supplies, equipment and medication issued to students and faculty.

Coordinate the repair and maintenance of dental equipment.

Prepare patient count reports for the clinic director.

Communicate with vendors and become familiar with new products and equipment.

Answer phones, schedule appointments, handle patient files and provide information and assistance to patients, hospitals and the doctor's offices.

Provide orientation to residents and dental students new to the periodontal department.

Attend in-service programs and various meetings as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

High School education plus one year of dental assistant experience including knowledge of dental terminology and anatomy, regulator agency requirements, 4-handed dentistry, instrumentation, impression materials and cements, x-ray technology and procedures, sterilization procedures, patient management techniques, and Health-Care Provider CPR.

Dexterity and the ability to tolerate long periods of bending, standing and walking

Strong verbal and written communication skills including listening skills, and ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population

Basic computer skills

Excellent customer service and discretion

Flexibility

Ability to work independently with little supervision and frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of surgical assisting and use of moderate sedation would be of great assistance in the surgical clinic.

Previous experience with paperless record (axiUm) would also be a benefit to the scheduling and maintenance of patient records.

Experience with dental implant equipment and instrument handling as well as advanced surgical equipment would be appreciated.

Previous experience working in an academic setting and knowledge of Marquette University School of Dentistry policy and procedures helpful.
