Director, Finance

Summary Of Primary Purpose

Serves as a key member of the school’s leadership team providing strategic oversight and hands-on management of all financial functions. Oversees the financial health and operations of the school, ensuring efficient resource allocation and compliance with regulations. This role involves hands on preparing, budgets, financial planning, and strategic financial leadership. Managing the school's budget, overseeing financial reporting, and collaborating with other school leaders on financial matters. Plan, coordinate accounting, banking and other financial activities for the school. Ensure systems adhere to required compliance, best practices, maintains adequate internal controls, prepares financial statements in accordance with GAAP, budgeting, and other financial needs.

Scope Of Role

Staff oversight, 1-3 and may include outsourcing services (contracts & agreements) Financial accountability and responsibility of approximately $8 million in an annual operating budget

Essential Roles & Responsibilities, duties include but are not limited to:

Strategic Financial Leadership

Ensures financial integrity, transparency, and sustainability in alignment with the school’s Christian mission Manages the business office, oversees budgeting and reporting, ensures compliance with all financial regulations and tax obligations and supports the stewardship of resources in service of the school’s educational goals Partners with Head of School, Finance Committee and School Board to develop and implement long-term financial plans that align with the school’s mission and strategic priorities Prepare and present timely, accurate financial reports, dashboards and projections/forecasts to the Head of School, Finance Committee and School Board identifying areas for improvement and timely calls attention to matters that must be addressed Develop new processes and infrastructure for all accounting functions (i.e. income, bank reconciliation, payroll, payables, etc.) Serves as a trusted advisor on financial matters, risk management and sustainability

Budgeting and Financial Management

Develop, lead, and manage the school budgeting process in collaboration with school administration ensuring alignment with institutional goals and finance sustainability Monitor and manage cash flow, accounts payable/receivable and general ledger activity Oversee all tuition billing, collection, scholarships, discounts and financial aid processing Maintain internal controls and ensure fiscal compliance with GAAP and relevant state/federal regulations

Audit, Compliance and Risk Management

Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations (e.g. IRS, state, ACSI, etc.) and implement risk management strategies to safeguard the school’s assets Coordinate the annual independent audit and prepare all necessary documentation Manage the school’s property/casualty and officers’ liability, employment practices liability, and fiduciary liability insurance programs, manage claims and litigation.

Team Management and Operational Oversight

Oversee the business office personnel and outsourced financial vendors Collaborate with admissions, development, and administration to ensure financial alignment across departments. Support contracts for various services (i.e. facilities, vendors, etc.) Collaborate with school administrators, staff and other stakeholder to communicate financial information and promote sound financial practices Cross-functional collaboration. Be a visible, engaged presence working with Advancement, Enrollment, Operations, and Academics to ensure financial stewardship supports broader institutional goals

School Board and Finance Committee Support

Serve as the staff liaison to the Finance Committee Prepare financial materials and reports for Head of School, School Board and Finance Committee meetings Support governance and policy development related to finance

Ministry Duties/Expectations

This role is considered a ministry position rooted and grounded in the principles of God Incumbent will be called upon to pray for and with students, families, and colleagues Incumbent will daily teach and demonstrate Jesus Christ directly and indirectly through all speech, actions and the example set by how you behave as a staff member of the school

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities Required

Ability to lead and manage a finance team, delegate tasks, and provide guidance to other school staff Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate financial information to diverse audiences. Strong working knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and nonprofit/fund accounting Ability to analyze financial data, identify trends and make data-driven decisions/recommendations Ability to identify and resolve financial issues, ensuring the school’s financial stability Demonstrated experience in budgeting, financial analysis, compliance, and reporting Familiarity with tuition management systems, financial aid programs, and nonprofit accounting standards High degree of integrity, discretion, and professionalism in handling confidential information Strong attention to detail and understanding of nuanced school environment situations Strategic thinker with the ability to execute and manage details effectively Possesses high energy, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude Collaborative team member High emotional intelligence and ability to engage respectfully and productively with families and external vendors Collaborative and servant-hearted team member who models humility, accountability, and excellence. Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., MIP, Microix, FACTS).

Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration; CPA or MBA preferred 8 years of progressively responsible experience in financial leadership roles. Prior experience in an independent school or mission-driven nonprofit is strongly preferred

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: $86,000 – $109,650

FT Benefit, unless otherwise stated, the costs are shared between WCS/HCA and the employee: BCBS Medical 4 options, including HMO and PPO w/individual coverage, employee & spouse, employee & children, or employee & family.
