Definition & Essential Functions
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Transit System Administrator, A Transit Driver safely operates a bus on assigned route schedule (fixed and paratransit curb-to-curb service); collects and accounts for fares; performs daily bus safety inspection (pre and post-trip); greets and provides direction and other information to customers; assists passengers on and off the bus; and performs other related work as required. May work various hours and days of the week including Saturdays, holidays, and split shifts.

Tasks
  • Operates a variety of transit buses in a manner that ensures passenger comfort and safety.
  • Operates wheelchair ramp and assists disabled passengers in boarding, securing, riding and alighting in a safe manner.
  • Adheres to safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure the well-being of Vista Transit customers and employees.
  • Maintains schedule adherence for pull-out time and en-route service.
  • Performs complete pre and post trip inspection of bus, safety checks of equipment, and informs dispatch when adjustments or repairs are necessary.
  • Receives and transmits two-way radio messages involving customer transfers,
    accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or other unauthorized Vista Transit business utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure passenger and individual safety.
  • Reports hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at bus stops, including such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction and criminal activity.
  • Cleans and maintains transit equipment and buses.
  • Assists customers on and off transit buses.
  • Provides schedule, route and fare information to passengers seeking assistance concerning the Vista Transit System and connecting buses; notifies dispatch to obtain additional information as needed.
  • Responsible for complying with all City and departmental work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Collects fares and checks customer passes or transfers.

  1. Federal and State Traffic laws and regulations
  2. Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration (ADOT and FTA) rules, regulations and requirements pertaining to small urban transportation system operations.
  3. Local community and street system.
  4. First aid and emergency procedures.
  5. Operation of small and large transit buses.
  6. Safety principles and regulations applicable to bus operations.
  7. Proper bus maintenance and inspection procedures.

  9. Exercise tact and sound judgment when resolving operational and passenger problems.
  10. Perform Commercial Driver's License (CDL) inspections.
  11. Inspect equipment for safe operation and identify and report issues and safety hazards

  13. Maintain logs, daily schedules and various records.
  14. Monitor complex driving situation and make quick decisions
  15. Control an oversized steering wheel and maneuver a large commercial vehicle in crowded areas

Qualifications
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Must be at least 21 years of age per Department of Transportation guidelines to qualify for a CDL.
AZ Driver's license or ability or obtain one upon hire.
Must be able to pass ADOT physical before hire
Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL), minimum of a Class "B", including "P" Passenger endorsement, with medical certification or within 180 days after the start of employment.
Must be able to pass an Arizona department of Corrections background check before hire.
Preference will be given to a candidate who has a CDL
Additional position information:
  • An acceptable driving record shall have no more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years; no more than three (3) moving violations in the most recent 5 year period; and no more than four (4) current driving penalty points.

  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform during working hours. The uniform shall be provided and maintained by the City.
  • City of Sierra Vista is permitted and licensed to provide CDL training and skills test and may provide additional resources for new applicants to obtain other necessary pre-requisites for obtaining a CDL Class B.
  • Performance of the essential duties of this position include the following physical demands and/or working conditions:
    1. Work is regularly performed outside in seasonal climate and weather conditions.
    2. There are prolonged periods of time with limited rest breaks.
    3. You will be required to adhere to a strict schedule.
    4. You may be exposed to noisy and stressful conditions due to traffic and a two-way radio
    5. You may encounter slippery surfaces and dust.
    6. Physical demands include driving, walking, standing, bending, kneeling, getting in and out of the bus, , pushing and securing passengers in mobility devices, and sitting for long periods of time.
  • You will be required to maintain required certifications and licenses, and immediately notify management of any incident that could influence license status and ability to meet license requirements.
  • This position is considered safety sensitive and subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing under FTA drug and alcohol regulations.
