Youth Services Program Specialist

This position serves as the Youth Services Program Specialist and team member of the Youth Services staff. This position is responsible for planning and presenting multiple weekly programs for children, teens, and/or families. In addition, the Youth Services Program Specialist assists the Youth Services Librarian as needed with tasks including planning family programming, creating displays, and developing the Summer Reading program. The position also requires providing excellent customer service working the circulation desk and handling patron phone calls and inquiries. Hiring Range: $38,532.00 Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions of the Position: Plans, organizes, and implements Youth Services Programming in the library and virtually. Assists in planning and implementing special family events and seasonal programs including the Summer Reading program. Provides homework help, reader's advisory and reference assistance to youth, parents, and caregivers including book-a-librarian appointments Assists in cultivating community partnerships and coordinating outreach and community engagement opportunities. Assists with the selection of appropriate library materials for the children's collections. Effectively utilizes budget allocations for programming and maintains documentation of expenditures; provides to the Youth Services Manager a written budget request with justification and cost expectations for the coming year based on utilization of current budget and projected objectives and plans. Complete programming forms and accurately report statistical data within established deadlines Performs circulation duties including issuing library cards, locating materials, answering reference questions, collecting fines, and shelving books. Serves as Manager on Duty in the absence of a manager. Assists patrons with computer use, internet access, copier, and fax. Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Associate's Degree in Library Science, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or related field and one year of experience in a public library, school, or childcare facility. Licensing and Certifications: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license Supplemental Information

Work Environment/Location/Physical Demands: Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.
