ESPN Broadcast Crew Opportunities
Ever wanted to work behind the scenes for an ESPN broadcast? The Sport and Broadcast Productions unit is looking for students to work on broadcast crews covering UVA sporting events. Students will cover games on ACC Network Extra to start and will have the chance to grow into roles working on shows that air on ESPN2/ESPNU/ACCN. If you are interested in a career in sports broadcasting this is a great place to start! UVA students have gone on to work in various roles at ESPN and elsewhere in the industry. Students also have the opportunity to learn skills that translate to other forms of broadcasting (i.e. news). No previous experience is required. Entry-level opportunities are available in the following areas: Camera Operators Physically operate a camera during events based on assignments provided by the broadcast director Assist with set up and tear down of gear at the venue Replay Operators Utilize Evertz Dreamcatcher equipment to provide both instant replays and edited highlight packages during broadcasts Clip, label, and export footage for future use Graphics Operators Utilize Ross Xpression and Dashboard software to create all graphics that are used during a broadcast Heavily focused on finding interesting statistics or biographical notes to display Associate Producers Conduct extensive research and work with the show producer to compile a list of graphics to be built for a broadcast Use this prep work to oversee the graphics department during the show The schedule for this position depends heavily on the timing of home athletic events, which means that shifts are primarily on evenings/weekends. Shifts typically last 7-8 hours, with crew members arriving 4-5 hours prior to the start of an event. As a result, shifts on weekdays often start at 2:30 or 3pm. Occasional office hours may be required for training or production purposes. Since the athletic schedule varies from week to week these positions do not have guaranteed hours. Students should expect to work anywhere from 7-20 hours in a week. Students who show significant interest/dedication will get more hours than those who do not. Required qualifications: Passion for and general working knowledge of multiple NCAA sports Desire to learn and develop skills useful in the execution of live television broadcasts Attention to detail and accuracy in performing job responsibilities Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends Preferred qualifications: Desire to pursue live production as a career opportunity Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment Previous video editing, camera, or live production experience Minimum education requirement: Must be a current UVA student.
