Position Overview The Weld Department Supervisor leads and oversees all aspects of manual welding operations, ensuring schedules are met, production runs efficiently, and quality standards are maintained. This role is responsible for planning, organization, team leadership, and cross-departmental coordination to deliver high-quality welded components on time. While the focus is on manual welding, this position also provides oversight and coordination with the robotic welding team.
Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management Build, lead, and retain a high-performing welding team while fostering a positive, respectful work environment.
Enforce company policies regarding safety, attendance, break times, and productivity.
Conduct performance reviews, recommend compensation adjustments, and address employee relations in coordination with HR.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all shifts to ensure smooth transitions and minimal downtime.
Scheduling & Production Coordination Create and maintain daily and weekly schedules for welders, prioritizing jobs to meet production goals and reduce WIP.
Coordinate with the Production Manager and Weld Finishing Supervisor to ensure timely completion of work orders.
Monitor part readiness before welders start jobs to reduce delays.
Communicate with other departments regarding late or missing parts and escalate issues as needed.
Organization & Workflow Management Maintain an organized welding department and kitting area, ensuring each job has the required travelers, routing sheets, and documentation.
Ensure only one job is in each booth at a time to maintain focus and quality.
Keep work areas clean and free of hazards.
Quality Assurance Schedule jobs with consideration for complexity and quality risk (e.g., new or revised parts) to ensure adequate quality oversight.
Ensure compliance with ISO procedures, including first-piece and in-process inspections.
Verify all inspection sheets and documentation are completed correctly.
Prevent material and tool waste while ensuring adequate supplies are on hand.
Efficiency Tracking & Reporting Track and enter daily welding efficiency data, comparing quoted vs. actual production times.
Provide efficiency reports to the executive leadership team and recommend process improvements.
Robotic Weld Coordination Partner with the Robotic Weld Lead to maintain schedules and workflow in the robotic welding area.
Ensure organization, cleanliness, and readiness of robotic weld operations.
Training & Safety Oversee cross-training within both manual and robotic welding departments, reporting progress to HR.
Maintain departmental safety standards, including PPE requirements and incident reporting.
Identify and source safer or more efficient PPE as needed.
Production Planning & Execution Collaborate with the Production Manager and shift leads to set clear, measurable daily production goals.
Monitor upstream processes (cutting, punching, forming) to ensure timely workflow to welding.
Adjust staffing and cross-functional resources to meet changing customer demands.
Requirements Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop teams.
Solid understanding of mathematics for job verification and measurements.
In-depth knowledge of welding processes, fabrication techniques, and related equipment.
Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering blueprints, tolerances, and specifications.
Ability to work in manufacturing environments with heat, noise, dust, and fumes.
