A mission-driven local government committed to creating a connected, vibrant, and sustainable community for all residents. A leadership team that values innovation, collaboration, and thoughtful planning to guide long-term growth. An organization with deep community roots and a focus on environmental stewardship, smart land use, and inclusive development. A team that works closely with civic boards, elected officials, developers, and the public to support balanced urban and rural integration. A city poised for strategic growth, attracting new investment while preserving its character and natural resources.

LOCATION

On-site in a growing municipality in central North Carolina, located roughly one hour east of Charlotte.

What They Offer You

A key leadership role with high visibility and influence over the City’s long-range vision and growth trajectory. Direct collaboration with City leadership, elected officials, and community stakeholders. A stable, public sector environment offering strong benefits, a healthy work-life balance, and job security. The opportunity to lead progressive planning initiatives, zoning updates, and community engagement efforts. A role that combines strategic leadership, operational execution, and meaningful civic impact.

WHY THIS ROLE IS IMPORTANT

Serves as the City’s top planning official, guiding zoning, land use, development, and long-range strategic planning initiatives. Advises senior leaders and boards on development policies, ordinances, and growth challenges facing the municipality. Engages directly with citizens, developers, architects, and engineers to support thoughtful community development. Leads the review and enhancement of zoning ordinances, appearance standards, subdivision regulations, and historic preservation efforts. Manages grant opportunities, department operations, planning board agendas, and public-facing development concerns.

THE BACKGROUND THAT FITS

Bachelor’s degree in planning, geography, public administration, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred. Extensive experience in municipal, county, or regional planning, including both current and long-range projects. Strong working knowledge of zoning laws, floodplain regulation, subdivision codes, and land use principles. Experience advising government boards or councils and working with community groups and technical teams. AICP certification and/or Floodplain Management Certification strongly preferred, or willingness to obtain.
