MP Materials
Company Overview:
MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.
We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.
We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Engineer to join the Magnet Techology group to lead the development and application of functional and corrosion-resistant coatings for high-performance rare earth permanent magnets. This position plays a critical role in enabling the durability and reliability of magnets used in harsh or high-performance environments such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, aerospace, and industrial automation. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in coating formulation, binder chemistry, surface treatment, pigment/additive selection, and process engineering, with strong foundation in material interactions at the interface level.
Position Responsibilities:
Lead the research, formulation, and optimization of coating systems tailored for rare-earth permanent magnets.
Develop and refine surface preparation methods (e.g., sandblasting, chemical treatments, passivation, plating) to ensure coating adhesion and performance.
Develop and optimize coating application processes with a focus on scalability and process control.
Characterize coating performance in terms of corrosion resistance (e.g., salt spray, humidity tests), thermal stability, adhesion strength, and impact on magnetic performance.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (materials science, machining, quality, production) to define coating specifications and integrate them into the production line.
Perform hands-on prototyping and process trials, working directly with in-house equipment, laboratory technicians, and process engineers.
Lead root cause analysis and implement improvements for coating-related quality issues in production or prototyping.
Write and maintain technical documentation, including coating standards, process instructions, and test reports.
Work closely with suppliers and external labs on new materials evaluation and qualification.
Work closely with EHS to ensure that all work is done to ensure world-class health and safety, and full compliance with relevant environmental regulations.
Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Surface Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field.
3+ years of experience with coating development and application, preferably for metals, ceramics, or magnetic materials.
Deep understanding of surface chemistry, adhesion mechanics, and coating failure modes.
Experience with coating application techniques and cure methods.
Proficient with lab equipment such as viscometer, thickness gauges, furnaces, and salt spray chambers.
Experience leading technical development projects, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Qualities:
Experience with functional coating development for rare earth magnets or other moisture-sensitive, oxidizing materials.
Knowledge of magnetic performance impacts due to surface treatments and coatings.
Experience with magnet-related manufacturing processes (e.g. sintering, magnetization, etc.).
Familiarity with materials science and metallurgy.
Lifelong learner able and enthusiastic to apply existing skills and experiences to new problems.
