Surgical Assistant
The Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures. More specifically, an employee in this position provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the Surgical Assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. Core responsibilities include: Maintaining established University and hospital directives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards. Preserving current knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment. Maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use, and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties and suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other necessary measures. Assisting with retracting tissues and performing wound closure. Preparing surgical site and drapes and positioning patient to obtain the best exposure for the surgical procedure. Providing visualization of the operative sight by placing and securing retractors, packing with sponges, manipulating tissue, suctioning, irrigating, and manipulating suture materials. Facilitating volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques. Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressing. Ensuring that drainage systems are appropriately secured to tissue. Adhering to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguarding University assets. Core qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant field. Certification and Licensing: Certification in relevant specialty or field. Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes: Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary. Commitment to the University's core values.
