Position Summary The CNC Machine Operator plays a vital role in the execution of structural steel fabrication. Operating a range of CNC machinery (including Angle master, Plate Burner, and Beamline systems), the successful candidate will bring a strong mechanical aptitude, deep knowledge of CNC operations, and a commitment to both safety and precision. This is a hands-on position in a high-paced production environment, contributing directly to our quality output and on-time project delivery.
Key Responsibilities 1. CNC Machine Setup & Operation Configure and operate CNC equipment per work orders and production drawings. Operate Angle master, Plate burner, and Beamline machines for cutting, drilling, punching, and marking operations. Calibrate machines and execute test runs and make necessary program edits to ensure operational accuracy and output quality 2. Material Handling & Processing Load and position raw steel materials (angles, beams, plates) using overhead cranes and forklifts. Verify material alignment and secure positioning before machining. Unload and inspect completed parts to ensure they meet drawing specifications. 3. Quality Control & Inspection Perform in-process and final inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and blueprints. Detect and address defects, wear issues, or programming errors. Maintain production logs and inspection reports with a high degree of accuracy. Anticipate foreseeable issues and take the initiative to troubleshoot or escalate as needed, e.g., when encountering warped plates, angles out of tolerance, or inconsistent cuts. 4. Maintenance & Safety Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning and lubrication. Promptly report significant mechanical issues and coordinate scheduled maintenance. Comply with OSHA safety standards and all internal safety protocols including PPE use, lockout/tagout procedures, and machine guarding. Coordinate and interface with our Millwright for mechanical troubleshooting, complex repairs, and scheduled maintenance tasks. 5. Teamwork & Communication Collaborate closely with foremen, programmers, and production team to meet daily output targets. Proactively report any equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or quality deviations. Accurately complete production documentation and tracking system entries. Demonstrate initiative by respectfully suggesting process improvements or introducing more efficient methods; we value team members who contribute ideas and help us evolve.
Required Qualifications Minimum 2-3 years of CNC operation experience in structural steel fabrication. Familiarity with SigmaNEST software or similar CNC programming tools preferred/desirable, with a willingness and ability to learn nesting, editing, and tolerance-specific cutting paths. Demonstrated experience with CNC machinery or comparable structural steel systems. Ability to read, comprehend, and navigate technical drawings and detailed fabrication specifications with confidence and accuracy. Proficient in use of precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and squares. Solid understanding of structural steel grades, tolerances, and machining parameters. Proven commitment to safety procedures and OSHA compliance. Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities. Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a high-noise environment. Valid forklift certification preferred; overhead crane operation experience is a plus. Solid basic math skills; ability to calculate measurements, material lengths, angles, and tolerances accurately. High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical training is a plus.
