Position Summary
The Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Nursing Officer (COO/CNO) serves as a strategic, operational, and clinical leader, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the hospital and ambulatory care while ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, and clinical quality. This executive will drive operational efficiency, optimize clinical service delivery, and foster a culture of clinical excellence, staff engagement, and patient-centered care.
The COO/CNO will play a key role in advancing the hospital’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities, partnering with executive leadership, medical staff, and operational leaders to enhance performance across financial, operational, quality, and patient experience domains.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight and operational leadership for all hospital operations, including inpatient, outpatient, ancillary, and support services.
  • Lead initiatives to optimize operational efficiency, improve patient throughput, and achieve key performance targets in quality, safety, and financial outcomes.
  • Oversee operational budgets, capital projects, and resource allocation to ensure effective and sustainable operations.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on long-range planning, strategic initiatives, and organizational growth priorities.
Clinical & Nursing Leadership
  • Serve as the highest-ranking nursing executive, responsible for nursing strategy, practice standards, professional development, and clinical quality across the organization.
  • Ensure evidence-based, patient-centered, and culturally competent nursing care is delivered throughout the hospital.
  • Lead initiatives to improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, regulatory readiness, and accreditation compliance.
  • Foster a culture of nursing excellence and professional development, ensuring Magnet or equivalent standards where applicable.
Strategic & Organizational Development
  • Collaborate with medical staff leadership to align clinical operations with medical practice needs, supporting physician engagement, recruitment, and retention.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team on operational and clinical strategy.
  • Support enterprise-wide performance improvement initiatives, operational redesign, and system integration projects.
  • Lead operational readiness for new services, programs, and facility expansions.
People & Culture Leadership
  • Champion a culture of accountability, engagement, inclusivity, and clinical excellence.
  • Develop and mentor operational and nursing leaders to build a pipeline of future leadership talent.
  • Ensure effective workforce planning, staffing models, and employee engagement strategies to support hospital operations and clinical care delivery.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or related field required.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in hospital operations and nursing leadership, with at least 5 years in an executive role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in hospital operations, clinical program management, financial stewardship, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong track record of building high-performing leadership teams, operational turnaround, and clinical quality improvement.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with physicians, staff, patients, and external stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in a Magnet-designated hospital or health system.
  • Background in leading large, complex hospital operations or multi-site healthcare systems.
  • Lean Six Sigma or performance improvement certification preferred.

Physical Demands
Job requires ability to move throughout all areas of the hospital.
Job involves carrying of documents, books, chairs and small equipment (i.e. laptops.)
Job requires frequent keyboarding and telephone use.
Reaching and bending as related to accessing file drawers and shelves.
Positions would be sustained for not greater than 60 minutes
Work Demands
Usually works in a comfortable environment. The position requires extreme flexibility with this type of independent work. The position demands frequent schedule changes and also irregular working hours to accommodate fluctuations in business needs.
