Outdoor Programs Environmental Education Program Coordinator
Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison's public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.
As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!
Program Description:
MSCR Outdoor programs offers dynamic and engaging experiential and environmental education opportunities for students, community groups and corporate clients. Our mission is to empower and facilitate individual and group transformation through experiential learning providing a positive outdoor experience. Our Environmental Education programming aims to provide school groups and community groups with a positive outdoor experience using inquiry-based learning through nature exploration.
Job Description & Duties:
• Assists in planning, programming, and oversight of environmental education programs and community environmental education and nature programs. • Collaborates with other Outdoor Programs Program Coordinators to provide intentional programming that meets participant goals • General oversight and property management at the Madison School Forest located in the town of Verona:
o Inventories and maintains equipment and files in nature center and other buildings o Participates as a member of the School Forest Advisory Board including attending meetings as scheduled o Communicates any site issues and addresses when appropriate
• Under the guidance of the MSCR Program Specialist:
o Provides orientation, training, and coaching to Outdoor Instructors on environmental education o Annually evaluates Outdoor Programs Instructors with support from Outdoor Programs Specialists and in collaboration with other Program Coordinators o Communicates program plans, changes, and expectations to seasonal Outdoor Instructors.
• Supports groups to help plan environmental education and overnight programs. • Performs any additional responsibilities assigned by the supervisor. • Position is 70% direct programming, 30% training, planning, and coordinating

9/1/2025
Program Dates:
All year round with varied hours by season. Typically, during "high seasons" (spring, summer, and fall) 30 hours/ week.During the "low season" (winter) no more than 18.5 hours/week.
Work Location:
Main office space is at MSCR Central but program locations vary throughout the city of Madison and at the Madison School Forest located in the town of Verona.
Hours/week:
18.5-40 hrs
Work hours:
Varies; Typically, Monday through Friday with some weekend hours. Most of our programs start and end between the hours of 8am and 4pm, however there is some evening work as well.
Payrate:
21.00 - 27.00 /hour
Minimum Qualifications:
• At least two years of previous experience instructing environmental education programs with youth. • Must be detail-oriented and have strong organizational, communication and computer skills with G Suite • Developed knowledge of risk management planning for outdoor activities. • Enthusiasm for facilitating individuals and groups to learn through experiential practices. • Must be comfortable working outdoors all day in a variety of weather conditions. • Certified or able to obtain certification in CPR and first aid. • Ability to prioritize tasks and shift priorities as program needs develop and change • Physical ability to stand and walk over rough, unpaved terrain. • Comfortable leading environmental education programs at various program locations and being an example to staff. • Experience supervising and coaching/mentoring staff • Strong communication skills with diverse groups of people • Willingness to travel to program site locations in various areas in and around the city of Madison, reliable transportation required.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Background in Environmental Education curriculum planning and evaluation or other certifications or background knowledge of environmental curriculum. • Ability to generate excitement, concern and respect for the outdoors with youth. • Knowledge of regional flora and fauna including wooded areas, ponds and prairies. • BS or BA in recreation, education, environmental education, natural science, or a closely related field. • Secondary language skills in Spanish are desired but not required. • Ability to work as a team, take on a leadership role, and maintain a positive work environment, while supporting staff and enforcing program rules consistently. • Self-motivated to work on projects and assigned tasks.
