License: Registered in echocardiography (RCS or RDCS) required. Certifications: BLS certified through American Heart Association required. Must-Have: Successful completion of an accredited ultrasound program. Associate Degree in Biological Sciences, Radiology, Ultrasound, or a relevant health sciences field. Description: The Cardiac Sonographer independently performs assessments and a variety of non-invasive studies using ultrasound and related diagnostic technology. The sonographer records the results and clinical preliminary impressions as indicated. The results of these exams are used to direct the course of patient care. The sonographer uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to evaluate anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic disease processes. The sonographer assists with transthoracic echo, transesophageal, and stress testing. Procedures include dobutamine, treadmill exercise stress echo, and carotid duplex. The sonographer communicates preliminary impressions of examination results to supervising physicians. All examinations are performed within standard protocols on adults and geriatric patients. Occasionally, examinations may be performed on adolescents and pediatric age groups. The sonographer performs examinations using both stationary and portable equipment. The sonographer serves as a clinical instructor for ultrasound students and participates in the instruction of fellows, residents, and visiting physicians. The sonographer may also participate in clinical research and act as a clinical resource to staff throughout the system. The position requires the ability to float between various units based on staffing needs. Weekend coverage may be required. The sonographer must be able to administer ultrasound enhancement agents and complete a set number of scans per day to meet departmental expectations. Competency in telemetry is also required, with strict passing criteria for evaluations. The role demands effective communication and collaboration in a fast-paced clinical environment.
